The University of Washington's Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for one full-time Assistant Teaching Professor (100% FTE).

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington has an excellent opportunity for a non-tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor. We offer a highly collegial and collaborative culture, with a range of teaching and curriculum-development opportunities in undergraduate, graduate and professional certificate courses. The portfolio of expected teaching responsibilities will include our course in Interfaces, Surfaces and Colloids along with additional core and elective lecture and laboratory classes. Additional responsibilities will include supporting our teaching laboratory facilities and shared research instrumentation. The successful candidate will be appointed the John C. Berg Endowed Lecturer in Interfacial and Colloid Science .

The Assistant Teaching Professor will be hired on multi-year appointments of a minimum of 3 years with a 9-month service period (September 16 through June 15) that may allow for additional opportunities to teach during the summer. While the UW does not offer a path for tenure for teaching-track positions, the position can be renewed, and pathways for promotion and advancement are possible. The anticipated start date could be as soon as March 31, 2026. The initial appointment duration will be 3-5 years and compensation will be commensurate with the applicant's qualifications. The base salary range for this position is: $9,400 -$10,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate and deliver project-based learning curricula and capstone projects. The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty conducting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ground-breaking research, instruction, and collaboration. This position will also be involved in enabling state-of-the-art research in the areas of interfacial, colloid, and polymer science through the use of a variety of laboratory instrumentation.

UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Assistant teaching professors at UW are primarily evaluated with regard to their teaching and service. Our Teaching Professors are long-term educational professionals who combine instructional excellence with a variety of leadership, community building, outreach, pedagogy advances, and scholarship. The Seattle area is particularly attractive given the presence of significant industrial research laboratories as well as a vibrant technology-driven entrepreneurial community that further enhances the intellectual atmosphere.

Qualifications

The position requires a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field (or foreign equivalent) and the following:

  • Teaching expertise in Chemical Engineering laboratory courses including, but not limited to, graduate teaching assistantships
  • Demonstrated expertise, gained via research or teaching, in Interfaces, Surfaces and Colloids or a related subject
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing shared instrumentation facilities used for teaching and research
