Career OpportunityLooking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for a Coordinator, Safety and Environment to join our Plant Maintenance Team
What You Will DoAs the Safety and Environmental Coordinator, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Plant Maintenance Department operations meet all environmental and safety requirements. This includes reviewing and interpreting current and proposed legislation, assessing compliance risks, and implementing strategies that align with policies and objectives. You will also provide technical and administrative expertise on environmental protection, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and management systems, while developing procedures that safeguard both environmental integrity and workplace safety.
This involves the following:
- Maintaining inventory of environmental activities and bulk storage systems, including inspection and testing data.
- Administering and oversee environmental consultants and ensure timely execution of audit findings.
- Monitoring compliance with environmental legislation and regulations while developing responses to issues and inquiries.
- Investigating environmental incidents (e.g., spills, violations) and implementing corrective actions.
- Developing and updating work methods, procedures, and contingency plans for environmental protection.
- Preparing technical reports, specifications, and project justifications; analyzing maintenance costs related to environmental activities.
- Providing technical expertise on sanitary sewage, storm sewage, air exhaust, and hazardous waste handling/disposal.
- Reviewing design drawings and specifications from an environmental perspective.
- Maintaining documentation and files on environmental legal requirements (e.g., spill reports, permits, certificates of approval).
- Auditing and tracking hazardous liquid waste manifests and other compliance records.
- Planning, implementing, and monitoring departmental safety programs (e.g., confined space entry, designated substance surveys, injury prevention).
- Developing hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA) and confined space signage systems.
- Ensuring compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Act requirements for owners, employers, supervisors, and employees.
- Coordinating investigations and responses to Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) items; represent department on JHSC.
- Supporting safety culture initiatives and conducting departmental safety audits (e.g., training documentation, equipment checks).
- Reviewing design drawings and work plans from a safety perspective; developing Safety Talk Plans and training programs.
- Acting as project manager for environmental and safety initiatives involving staff and consultants.
- Representing the department on committees and task forces; liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyzing bids and recommending contractors; maintaining a central resource library on environmental and safety issues.
- Staying current with industry practices, emerging trends, and regulatory changes to ensure organizational compliance and leadership.
- Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

- Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline, or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Sound knowledge of environmental engineering technology and related principles, methods and practices.
- Good working knowledge of all applicable Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation and regulations combined with an awareness of current environmental issues and concerns.
- Must have sound technical knowledge with respect to sanitary/storm sewage, air exhaust and bulk storage systems, related preventative maintenance programs, as well as procedures relating to the handling of hazardous liquid spills, and the handling/disposal of hazardous waste.
- Must possess sound judgement; well-developed analytical and problem solving skills; excellent interpersonal, verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
- Several years of directly related work experience.
- Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
- Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
- Must have a valid Class G Province of Ontario Driver's Licence
