À propos
The Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for aerospace components, subassemblies, and full system builds. This role requires deep technical knowledge of manufacturing processes- especially CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and aerospace-grade finishing. The Estimator plays a key role in proposal generation, customer quotations, and contract pricing strategy, ensuring the business remains competitive while maintaining margin objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Cost Estimation & Quotation Development
- Develop detailed cost breakdowns for new builds, repeat jobs, design modifications, and government RFQs.
- Create itemized cost models for machining, sheet metal, assembly, and finishing.
- Estimate per-part cost for various batch sizes, considering setup, run time, yield, and rework.
- Engineering and Manufacturing Review
- Analyze customer drawings, 3D CAD models, and specifications to extract material, feature complexity, and tolerance requirements.
- Determine tooling and fixturing needs; evaluate buy vs. build strategies for complex jigs.
- Identify special processes and inspection needs (tight tolerances, AS9102 FAI, critical features).
- Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination
- Request and incorporate supplier pricing for materials and subcontracted (heat treating, NDT, paint and coatings).
- Ensure quotes reflect current market pricing and realistic lead times.
- Labor and Machine Time Calculation
- Estimate labor hours per operation (setup, run, inspection, final packaging) using internal standards and time studies.
- Factor in machine cycle time, setup losses, tool changes, and deburring in cost build-up.
- Apply knowledge of equipment capacity and process capability to ensure feasibility.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead pre-quote reviews with engineering, production, and quality assurance.
- Collaborate with purchasing on raw material pricing, minimum order quantity, and supplier lead times.
- Support production with quote-to-order handoffs to ensure smooth job launch.
- Pricing Strategy and Proposal Support
- Participate in pricing reviews with program managers and executive team.
- Justify assumptions, risk factors, and cost drivers during internal and customer- facing reviews.
- Assist in developing pricing models for different contract types (fixed price, cost plus, and T&M).
- Data Management and Process Improvement
- Maintain historical cost data and update rate sheets based on actual performance.
- Analyze variances between estimated and actual job costs to improve accuracy.
- Support continuous improvement by identifying cost-saving processes or design changes.

- High school diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of estimating experience in an aerospace or precision manufacturing environment.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and aerospace assemblies.
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, proficient with GD&T and blueprint analysis.
- Familiar with aerospace materials and finishing standards.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, experience using ERP/MRP systems.
- Experience working with AS9100 standards and familiarity with ITAR requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or related field.
