Job Summary:
Maintains responsibility for overall operation of the clinical laboratory in consultation with and under the direction of Medical Directors (Pathologists) and the Regional Clinical Laboratory Directors. Develops, monitors and provides leadership for the financial, contracting, regulatory, accreditation and client services policies procedures for the clinical/anatomic laboratories. Selects appropriate instrumentation or test methodologies, develops and maintains appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) program, monitors testing and QA processes, including recording and reporting of results. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, chemical sciences or allied health technologies or equivalent: Required
- Master's Degree: Preferred
- Five years' clinical laboratory experience: Preferred
- One year's leadership experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in state of employment: Required in CA
- Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Labs (NCA): Preferred in CA and HI
Essential Functions:
- Manages the day-to-day operations of a unit/department. Maintains first line accountability for outcomes and satisfaction. Facilitates effective organization of staff, equipment, supplies and time. Supervises unit/department through delegation of tasks. Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results. Coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations, or conclusions. Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques. Plans, develops and presents workshops. Ensures program compliance with applicable regulations and safe working environment. Uses consistent exercise of discretion and judgment.
- Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepares and maintains applicable records. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results. Recommends and develops quality cost containment programs for laboratory services (e.g., staffing patterns, utilization, etc.). Monitors Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal/external regulations. Reviews patient and quality control results for shifts and trends, monitoring quality of departmental functions.
