Ophthalmic Assistant
The purpose of this position is to assist the doctors in patient care.
Under the general direction of the doctors and the office manager, the ophthalmic assistant performs the following duties:
- Prepares patients for treatment by taking medical histories, visual acuities, and other duties as directed by the doctor.
- Assists with in-office surgical procedures, prepares and sets up instruments, draws up solutions/medications and is responsible for instrument cleansing and sterilization.
- Performs diagnostic procedures and tests as required.
- Assists patient scheduling, obtains proper and completed consent forms.
Participates in the coding process.
- Performs telephone triage for patients and screens calls as needed by determining if a patient needs to be seen and/or if doctor needs to take the call.
- Educates patients regarding procedures. Instructs patients in use of eye drops and/or medications.
- Tracks medical supplies and orders as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Interest in patient care or nursing experience with on-the-job training for ophthalmic office duties.
- Must attend seminars related to ophthalmology and other related fields.
Experience and Training
- Office experience preferred.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- RN, LPN, COA, or COT preferred.
Essential Job Functions
Must be able to learn to perform the following functions:
Patient interviewing and initial patient examination
Optical coherence tomography testing
Must be able to operate the following office equipment:
Computer
Copy machine
Fax machine
Telephone
Printer
Must be able to type 40-words per minute.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
All patient and office information is confidential.
Staff is encouraged to obtain certification.
This is an entry level position with opportunities for advancement.

Pay: $ $21.00 per hour
