Indian River County

Working under the daily supervision of the Markings Crew Leader and the direction of the Traffic Operations Foreman. Performs a variety of unskilled & semi-skilled duties within County rights-of-way. Work may be as part of a work group or individually.

  • Performs the lay-out and installation of pavement markings on streets, highways, parking lots, utilizing various material and application equipment
  • Removes traffic markers from the pavement utilizing specialized equipment
  • Maintains and services machines and equipment used in pavement marking operations
  • Erects road signs in accordance with County and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards, repairs damaged road signs, makes and repairs barricades
  • Conducts traffic control and signage inspections
  • Prepares and sets up signage for special events, Temporary Traffic Control (TTC), and road closures
  • Operates a variety of handheld equipment and machinery, e.g., power saw, sockets, drill, pole saw, chainsaw, ratchet
  • Operates a forklift
  • Operates a utility truck
  • Utilizes an iPad/computer and related software to create and close out work orders
  • Maintains and fills sandbags as needed
  • Participate in the County's on-call program
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff

Education/Experience
High school diploma / GED and one (1) year of working experience in construction, road maintenance, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Or Registrations

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E driver's license.
  • Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, an FDOT-approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Intermediate certification.
  • Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, an IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I certification.
  • Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, an OSHA forklift safety certification.

Knowledge, Abilities, And Skills

  • Demonstrated skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to perform work
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and the general public
  • Able to install traffic control signs, posts and street signs
  • Able to work under stressful conditions
  • Ability to operate an iPad and computer
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to perform work under adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to do heavy lifting up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Ability to work with a crew
  • Physical ability to meet requirements of the position - including, but not limited to - climbing, loading and unloading equipment, lifting and carrying

Environmental Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work outdoors in adverse and extreme weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, electrical energy, and stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
