Description

To create a pool of qualified applicants, Columbia Basin College (CBC) accepts applications for adjunct faculty to teach course offerings throughout the year. Applications are kept in the pool through the duration of the academic school year.

Instructional Rate: $ $72.72 per hour
Non-Instructional Rate: $ $50.00 per hour
Meeting Rate: $ $30.00 per hour

If work is performed outside of instruction, it will be paid at the non-instructional rate of $50.00 per hour or the meeting rate of $30.00 per hour.

CBC invites applications for Adjunct Faculty to teach courses within the Apprenticeship Fire Science Program. Courses include Fire Inspections, Building Construction for Fire Protection, Fire Tactics, Fire Service Hydraulics, and Fire Protection Equipment.

Instruction will be delivered asynchronously online, allowing flexibility for working fire service professionals. The successful candidate will demonstrate subject matter expertise, commitment to student learning, and the ability to teach effectively in a virtual environment.

Adjunct faculty at CBC are responsible for fostering an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere consistent with the College's mission of providing accessible education that transforms lives and strengthens communities.

Adjunct faculty provide instruction for 11-week courses (Fall, Winter, Spring) and/or 8-week courses (Summer). There is no guarantee of continued employment beyond the quarter course assignment. Applicants with the appropriate qualifications may be considered for additional classes.

Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted directly by the appropriate dean or lead; otherwise, applications will remain in the pool for future consideration.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned Fire Science courses asynchronously using CBC's Learning Management System (Canvas);
  • Develop, organize, and deliver engaging course content aligned with program outcomes and industry standards;
  • Provide timely and meaningful feedback on student assignments and assessments;
  • Maintain consistent communication with students and encourage participation and engagement in the online environment;
  • Evaluate and report student performance and grades in accordance with departmental and institutional policies;
  • Collaborate with the Fire Science Program Director and Apprenticeship Coordinator to maintain course quality and instructional alignment;
  • Attend required faculty orientations and participate in professional development opportunities related to online teaching and fire service education; and
  • Uphold CBC's mission, vision, and values in all interactions with students, colleagues, and the community.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Fire Science, Fire Technology, Fire Administration, or a closely related field;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in the fire service (operations, prevention, inspection, or training);
  • Demonstrated experience in fire inspections, building construction for fire protection, fire tactics, fire service hydraulics, and fire protection equipment and systems;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn online learning technologies, including Canvas and digital instructional tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Emergency Services, or related discipline;
  • Fire Instructor I, II, or III certification;
  • College-level or academy teaching experience, particularly in asynchronous or online delivery;
  • Experience working within fire service apprenticeship or training programs;
  • Familiarity with IFSTA curriculum, NFPA standards, and current industry best practices; and
  • Demonstrated ability to promote student success in an inclusive, technology-based learning environment.

The quarter schedule for the academic year is as follows:
Fall 2025: September 15 - December 4
Winter 2026: January 5 - March 26
Spring 2026: April 6 - June 18
Summer 2026: June 29 - August 21
