Join Our Team as a Direct Support Professional
Are you passionate about helping individuals with intellectual disabilities live fulfilling, independent lives? We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Direct Support Professional (DSP) to support a smart, curious, fun-loving young man with Down Syndrome and Autism.
Why This Role Matters
Your work will directly impact his ability to gain independence, develop social skills, and engage with his community. He attends a day program three times a week with his caregiver, uses a visual schedule and AC device to support his daily routine.
What You'll Be Doing
As his DSP, you will play an essential role in helping him navigate daily life through:
- Personal Care & Daily Living Support: Assistance with IADLs and some assistance with toileting. One of his ISP goals this year is using the toilet independently and he is making good progress.
- Community Engagement & Socialization: Encouraging participation in group activities and independent living skills.
- Transportation: You will provide clean, safe, reliable transportation in your personal vehicle. Your pay will cover the cost of gas. This transportation must have be clean, safe, with working seatbelts and child safety locks. You will provide me with a copy of your car insurance, CPR & First Aid certification.
- Therapeutic Collaboration: Working alongside his speech therapist and behavior therapist to decrease problem behaviors and increase communication skills with his augmentative communication device.
- Behavioral Support & Skill Building: working with a behavior therapist and implementing the Behavior Support Plan to increase functional behavior skills at home and in the community
- Physical & Recreational Activities: Supporting exercise, including swimming, walking, and playing at the park.
- Assistance with medical appointment: Providing transportation to appointments. Picking up prescriptions, etc.
- Protective oversight: Ensuring the client's safety and well-being.
- Medication reminders.
What We're Looking For
- A mature, committed individual with strong family-based values.
- A male companion/caregiver. My son works better with male caregivers.
- Experience supporting non-verbal individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome and developmental disabilities.
- Familiarity with behavior support plans and augmentative communication devices.
- Very strong and physically fit & active—Jacob is 5 ft tall, weighs 152 pounds and he is very strong. you must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
- Patient, positive, and compassionate, with a great sense of humor
- Confident, relaxed, calm manner
- Safe driver that goes the speed limit and follows all traffic laws and regulations.
Additional Requirements
- Speaks English fluently
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow a daily schedule.
- Experience with behavior plans.
- You will provide transportation with your personal vehicle. This vehicle must be safe, clean and reliable, with working child-proof windows and child-proof door locks.
- Commitment to fostering independence, skill-building, and social engagement.
- Pass a National, State, and County background check.
- Copy of driving record
Shift Availability
I can offer 16 to 32 hours (depending on availability) between Monday and Thursday. The shifts are between 8 and 9 hours. We can establish your preferred shift.
Compensation
Pay rate is based on background, skills, work experience, job performance, and length of service
The maximum pay for this position is $30.00 to 35.00.
