Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Cardiff, UK

An amazing career opportunity to work on mechanical development of electronic and electro‑mechanical products, sustaining high volume PACS RFID access products and access control controllers sold worldwide. The role requires effective time management for multiple product life‑cycle stages, collaboration across departments and across seniority levels, both onsite and overseas. Occasional travel may be required.
Essential Duties
Own mechanical design and development of physical access readers and controllers.
Work with product management to confirm product requirements for allocated projects.
Perform independent task management.
Investigate and resolve customer issues related to readers and controllers.
Assist with sustaining and VAVE tasks – cost‑down investigations, production efficiencies and feature improvements on current products.
Research and implement alternative components and solutions to support contract manufacture and supply chain.
Participate in high‑level solution discussions covering architecture and technology.
Act as subject‑matter expert for mechanical engineering.
Primary Duties
Design and development of mechanical housings and accessories – plastic and metal.
Work alongside electrical design colleagues to develop mechanical solutions.
Collaborate with wider design team for design‑for‑manufacture.
Collaborate with tool makers and contract manufacturers.
Perform mechanical engineering test and validation on prototypes.
Support design validation group with final product testing and compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree level in engineering or related subject.
5‑10 years’ experience in engineering.
Other qualifications and experience will be considered.
Essential Skills
Proficient use of 3D CAD software – preferably SolidWorks.
High proficiency in 2D engineering and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.
Extensive knowledge of plastic injection moulding and tooling (2 k, over‑moulding, etc.) and tools from 200 kg to 3000 kg.
Good working knowledge of metal component manufacturing (sheet and cast).
Strong knowledge of various plastic and metal materials.
2‑3 years’ experience in medium to high volume mass production.
Other Desirable Knowledge and Skills
Up‑to‑date knowledge of modern injection moulding technologies.
Experience with different fabrication methods (machining, ultrasonic welding, etc.).
Simulation tools experience (Moldflow, thermal, stress, etc.).
Basic knowledge of electronics, RFID, wireless technologies.
Excellent communication skills, ability to interact with all levels of seniority.
Proficiency in MS Office, Windows, and collaboration tools such as Confluence or Wiki.
Document control experience (e.g., engineering changes, Agile PLM).
Work Requirements
Compliance with all relevant HID Global policies and procedures related to quality, security, safety, business continuity, and environmental systems.
Travel and fieldwork, including international travel may be required; employee must possess or be able to acquire a valid passport.
