Duties
- Assess patients' respiratory status by evaluating vital signs, blood gases, lung sounds, and medical history to develop tailored treatment plans.
- Administer respiratory therapy treatments such as oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and airway clearance techniques.
- Operate and monitor ventilators and other respiratory support equipment in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Manage airway interventions including intubation, extubation, suctioning, and airway stabilization procedures.
- Respond swiftly to emergency situations involving respiratory distress or failure in hospital environments like the ICU or emergency departments.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including physicians specializing in pulmonology, pediatrics, geriatrics, and trauma—to optimize patient care strategies.
- Conduct patient education on respiratory health management and medication administration to promote recovery and prevent complications.
- Document all procedures accurately within electronic medical records while maintaining compliance with hospital protocols and medical terminology standards.
- Perform routine assessments of vital signs such as pulse oximetry, respiratory rate, and blood pressure to monitor patient progress continuously.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on acute care outcomes within Level I or Level II trauma centers or specialized clinics.
- Maintain proficiency in physiology knowledge and anatomy related to the respiratory system to ensure precise interventions across diverse patient populations.
Qualifications
- Valid licensure or certification as a Respiratory Therapist from an accredited agency; active state registration preferred.
- Proven experience in hospital medicine with a strong background in critical care environments such as ICU or emergency medicine settings.
- Hands-on experience with ventilator management and airway procedures; OR experience is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology (medication administration), and medical terminology relevant to respiratory therapy.
- Familiarity with pediatric (pediatrics) and geriatric (geriatrics) patient needs; experience working within Level I or Level II trauma centers is a plus.
- Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments including vital signs monitoring and pulmonary function evaluation.
- Strong skills in acute care management with the capacity to respond effectively during emergencies involving airway compromise or respiratory failure.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with healthcare teams across inpatient units, outpatient clinics, or specialty departments such as pulmonology or critical care units.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development in hospital-based respiratory therapy practices including BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
