What You'll Do
This position has a starting pay of $19.899 per hour.
The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader performs responsible semi-skilled work leading and participating in the work of a small crew providing a variety of assistance in grounds maintenance, construction, and custodial jobs; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Crew Supervisor. Work guidance is provided to one or two subordinate or assigned work crews. Work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Tasks & Responsibilities
- Leads and participates in performing turf maintenance including mowing, fertilizing, sod installation and irrigation.
- Leads and participates in performing general ground maintenance including tree cutting/pruning, mulching/landscaping, litter control, playground installation and fence installation.
- Leads and participates in performing field preparation including lining ball fields, dragging baseball diamonds, and installing bases.
- Leads and participates in the work of basic repair, maintenance and/or construction of public buildings, grounds, and facilities.
- Leads and participates in performing building maintenance including painting, light carpentry, restrooms, changing light bulbs, litter control, etc.
- Assists and participates with special events including preparation set-up and removal, bleacher transportation, tent installation and removal, etc.
- Prepares simple work reports.
- Trains and instructs new workers in the safe operation of tools and equipment.
- Repairs and maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Qualifications
- Formal Education includes the completion of a High School Diploma or GED.
- At least two years' experience in a lead role supervising a crew in the absence of the supervisor.
- At least two years' experience operating tractors, various mowers, and power equipment.
- Must have possession of valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
- Must have a North Carolina Pesticide License or be able to obtain the NC Pesticide License within one year of hire date.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and more with assistance.
- Must have good knowledge of safety rules and regulations associated with the trade.
- Must be able to train and lead others in their work assignments.
- Must have general knowledge and experience in use of grounds maintenance equipment and supplies.
- Must have general knowledge of municipal repair and maintenance practices.
- Must have ability to operate trucks and small construction and repair equipment.
- Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal work orders and prepare reports.

- Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
- Must be able to see other workers, equipment, and vehicles from a distance for safety reasons when operating equipment and supervising employees.

- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
- Must be able to see operating panel of equipment and other work aids close at hand. Both eyes 20/25 corrected Depth Perception
- Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
- Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time and to operate the equipment safely.
- Depth Perception -4 Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
- To ensure safety, must be able to see wide span of area to observe employees and other people as they enter and leave work area.
- Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area.
- Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly from equipment and the immediate work area to observe other equipment or people who may be located at varying distances.
Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
- Heavy Work
- Exerting up to 50 pounds or more with assistance of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds or more of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, equipment, and hand tools. Physical demands usually require walking, standing, bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, climbing, and reaching. There is significant use of arms, hands, legs, and feet.

(Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All are requirements of this job.
- Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees working together to accomplish tasks. Must be able to hear over noise of motors to respond in the event there is a mechanical warning or verbal warning during operation of equipment.

- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor, employees, or the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives. As a leader, must be able to be make responsible decisions so good judgment is extremely important.
Mathematics Ability
- Using Arithmetic: Must be able to count and figure the amounts of materials and/or supplies needed for grounds maintenance and repair assignments. Must be able to make reports containing mathematical calculations.
Language Ability
- Read: Ability to read manuals, safety rules and regulations, City Personnel Ordinance, instructions, directions, report information and other documents relating to job.
- Write: Ability to write instructions and/or directives as received, notes pertaining to the job, figures for measurements, completed assignments on a work log, messages and reports.
- Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with supervisor, subordinates, other employees, and the general public. Must be able to communicate clearly and rapidly during emergency situations.
Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
- The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker will be exposed to weather, which is extremely hot and extremely cold, rain, sleet, ice, snow, high winds, flooding, and fog. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting hot, cold, wet, dirty, and sweaty.
Hazards
- The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader will be exposed to trash, trees, grass, shrubbery, dirt, chemicals and fertilizers, paint, gasoline, pesticides, herbicides, debris, and insects, etc. and will sometimes work in confined spaces. Work is subject to final bloodborne pathogens.

- Tractors with attachments, reel mowers, batwing and/or front deck mowers, pickup truck with trailer, heavy dump truck, light dump truck, bobcat, backhoes, chain saws, riding mowers, weed eaters, airless paint sprayers, paint, trash cans and liners, pesticides, herbicides, pruners, hoses, carpentry tools, ladders, hand tools and other work aids associated with this trade, safety manuals, City Personnel Resolution, and operator's manuals.Bottom of Form
