Our client can demonstrate almost half a century's expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems for a diverse range of industry sectors and are regarded by many in the industry as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the whole of the UK. As a result of continued success and a planned programme of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to complement their established team and deliver innovative special purpose automation machinery projects.
Responsibilities
Design and oversee an array of special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer hand‑over.
Perform mechanical design and detailing functions for multiple projects using 3D CAD, following the project plan and time allocations.
Arrange Design Reviews during the design process to ensure robust and reliable operation, design for assembly, and adherence to budgetary constraints.
Obtain Design Pass‑Off by the customer on time, produce BOMs within budget, and negotiate with external suppliers for cost‑efficient materials.
Assist the electrical design process by effective communication throughout the project, compile a build folder, and communicate build details to machine‑tool fitters.
Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers within the team, and undertake visits to customer sites to understand requirements, obtain measurements, and document all such requirements.
Assess and improve design concepts at the sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs, and lead times; identify key risks and compile plans for trials.
Obtain all parts, samples and drawings in advance; check the design work of other designers for accuracy.
Conduct project reviews with customers periodically, report status, and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) including manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings.
Carry out machine risk assessments to meet Machinery Directive requirements and lead projects during development and installation, providing timely “problem fixes” while adhering to H&S and safety rules.
Qualifications
Degree qualified/HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a mechanical design role, ideally related to automation machinery.
Expertise in 3D parametric CAD (Solid Edge preferred; SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, etc. also considered).
Proven track record of successfully delivering mechanical design projects to required timescales and budgetary constraints.
Knowledge of national and international standards for machine design and safety, and requirements to CE mark machine systems.
Self‑motivated positive “can do” approach to problem solving, commercial awareness, and ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Experience as part of a multi‑disciplined team solving problems.
