Job Overview:
Join our team at Freestone Collective, a local kitchen + Café + Market known for a focus on locally sourced, artisanal goods. The Food Prep / Prep Cook is an entry-level kitchen position that plays a vital role in supporting café food operations, as well as some catering and wholesale. This role focuses on routinely preparing ingredients, completing prep tasks, and maintaining a clean, organized workspace to support café service, catering, and wholesale production. This position is ideal for someone eager to learn, develop foundational kitchen skills, and contribute positively to a collaborative team environment.
Food Preparation & Execution:
- Prepare ingredients multiple time a week to support café menu requirements, including washing, chopping, slicing, portioning, wrapping burritos, and labeling.
- Execute prep recipes accurately to support café, catering, and wholesale needs.
- Assist with basic cooking tasks such as roasting, blanching, stocks, sauces, dressings, and fillings as needed.
Production Support:
- Support the kitchen team by ensuring all prep items are completed on time and to standard.
- Follow established recipes and prep lists to maintain consistency and quality.
- Communicate proactively with kitchen leads regarding prep status, shortages, or issues.
Quality Control:
- Maintain high standards for taste, freshness, portioning, and presentation of all prep items.
- Properly store food following FIFO principles and food safety standards.
Inventory & Organization:
- Assist with monitoring prep levels and ingredient usage to ensure sufficient inventory for upcoming service and production.
- Keep prep areas, refrigerators, and storage spaces organized and clearly labeled.
Sanitation & Safety:
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation at all times.
- Adhere strictly to food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
- Assist with daily and weekly cleaning tasks as assigned.
Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with the kitchen, pastry, and front-of-house teams to support smooth daily operations.
- Maintain a positive, dependable, and team-oriented attitude in a fast-paced environment.
Requirements:
Experience:
- Previous professional kitchen experience is strongly preferred, but not required as long as you have passion and experience with cooking.
- Entry-level candidates with a strong work ethic, reliability, and interest in food and hospitality are encouraged to apply.
Skills & Abilities:
- Basic knife skills or willingness to learn proper knife techniques.
- Strong attention to detail is critical. Ability to follow prep lists, recipes, and instructions accurately.
- Good time management and ability to complete tasks efficiently.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on kitchen environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and perform repetitive tasks.
- Comfortable working in warm and cold kitchen environments.
Personal Attributes:
- Genuine passion for great food, with exceptional focus on quality, taste, and presentation.
- Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
- Positive, collaborative, and team-focused attitude is a must.
- Willingness to learn and take feedback.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Culinary coursework, food safety certification, or relevant kitchen training.
- Experience in cafés, bakeries, or small-batch food production environments.
- Interest in locally sourced, seasonal, and scratch-made food.
Work Schedule:
- Part-Time, with potential for increased hours as our business grows. Shifts may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
