The role
We're looking for a Platform Engineer (Backend Focus) to build and scale the systems that currently power Babs. You'll own the core platform layer that connects data, events, and AI orchestration to the user experience. The work blends deep systems design with pragmatic execution and plays a central role in making Babs reliable, secure, and trustworthy. You'll help architect a platform built for scale and designed for real-world reliability and privacy protection. Your work will transform unstructured information — messages, events, and daily logistics — into structured insight that keeps families organized and connected while safeguarding their data and personal information. You'll work across both infrastructure and product layers — designing event pipelines, real-time data flows, and automation frameworks while supporting the user-facing features that make the product feel seamless. As Babs grows, you'll help us scale to thousands of households and beyond, ensuring that performance, security, and trust remain core to how we build.
What you'll do
  • Build for performance, reliability, security, and real-time responsiveness at scale
  • Design and implement platform services such as identity, permissions, event pipelines, and data synchronization
  • Build and maintain APIs and microservices using modern backend technologies
  • Develop reliable data flows that support context-aware automation and AI agents
  • Implement and uphold best practices in security, privacy, and data protection across all layers of the stack
  • Design, build, and operate production systems end to end, from architecture to observability
  • Collaborate with product engineers and designers to ensure the platform supports elegant, intuitive user experiences
  • Improve developer experience through clear abstractions, documentation, and platform tooling
  • Help shape early engineering culture and set high standards for quality, security, and performance

    • Our ideal candidate has
  • 4 or more years of backend or platform experience in high-quality consumer or AI-powered products
  • A systems mindset and a deep understanding of how data, events, and services connect
  • Strong fundamentals in data modeling, API design, and distributed systems
  • The ability to balance startup speed with long-term production quality
  • A respect for reliability, security, and thoughtful abstractions
  • A genuine care for building technology that quietly improves people's lives

    • Bonus points for
  • Experience working with large language models or AI prompting
  • Experience implementing or auditing application security and privacy controls
  • Familiarity with designing or evaluating AI workflows and Evals
  • Exposure to distributed tracing or observability systems (such as OTEL or Datadog)
  • Experience building production-grade applications across web or mobile (such as GCP, Firebase, or React Native)
  • Understanding of modern backend frameworks and event-driven systems
  • Experience designing scalable data models or real-time data flows
  • Contributions to open-source projects or developer communities
