About the Role
We are seeking experienced Phlebotomists to provide onsite laboratory services for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Bedford Healthcare System. This position supports inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department needs and plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care for our nation's Veterans.
This role involves phlebotomy, specimen processing, patient identification, and maintaining compliance with Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards.
Responsibilities
Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection
- Perform inpatient ward rounds, outpatient draws, ED draws, STAT, ASAP, and timed collections.
- Ensure positive patient identification before all specimen collection.
Sample Processing
- Process, prepare, and package samples for testing and send-outs.
- Accurately identify, document, and resolve collection or processing issues.
Safety & Compliance
- Protect patient information (electronic and paper).
- Follow all VA and laboratory safety guidelines.
Customer Service
- Provide professional, patient-centered care that avoids complaints from patients, staff, and stakeholders.
Additional Requirements
- Work in multiple areas of the laboratory as needed.
- Provide coverage during scheduled or unscheduled staff absences.
- Notify vendor and lab supervisor immediately if unable to complete a shift.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience required
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently
- Must meet ongoing competency and certification requirements
- Must complete all VA-mandated training, including:
- ACLS/BLS (every 2 years, 4 hours)
- VA Privacy & Information Security (annual, 1 hour)
- VHA Privacy & HIPAA Training (annual, 1 hour)
- Must provide proof of CEUs/CMEs when requested
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $ $25.50 per hour
