The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Foreperson to fill a permanent full-time position. The WWTP Operations Foreperson is an outside role responsible for coordinating daily operations at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). This position supports the WWTP Lead Operator – Operations and Supervisor by overseeing field activities, assigning and monitoring operational tasks, and ensuring that safe, compliant, and efficient practices are followed. As a frontline working leader, the Foreperson assists with troubleshooting, process optimization, and field training while maintaining a strong safety and environmental compliance culture.

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Unrestricted Level 4 Alberta Provincial Certification in Wastewater Treatment (or ability to obtain within 4 years).
  • Education or training in a one-year water/wastewater related technical program is preferred.
  • Must maintain current certifications in WHMIS, First Aid, Hazard Assessment, and other safety training as defined by the City.
  • Minimum of six (6) years' experience in planning and operating processes of municipal infrastructure in a Level III or IV certified system or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience using GIS, digital work management systems, and interpreting technical documents.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience providing day-to-day task direction, coaching, or coordination of staff or crews.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and lead by example in outdoor, physically demanding settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document activities clearly and accurately.
  • Well-developed computer skills including work management systems, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort with pumps, valves, controls, and process instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, regulations, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply the City's Approval to Operate, SOPs, and regulatory documents.
  • Capable of maintaining professionalism and courtesy when dealing with the public and cross-departmental teams.
  • Must be physically fit to meet the demands of field work including lifting, climbing, confined space entry, and awkward postures.
  • Ability to work year-round outdoors in all weather conditions, including noisy, wet, or odorous environments.
  • Competent in using specialized safety equipment such as SCBA, gas monitors, and fall protection gear.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, schematics, and GIS data.

Remuneration:

$40.89 to $46.47 per hour(Development Ladder)

Hours of Work:

80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday; after hours on-call is a requirement, some overtime when needed.
