Overview:

Assists the Director of Pharmacy in the administration and professional management of the Pharmacy

Department

Responsibilities:

  • Assumes all responsibilities of the Director in his/her absence; upon

assumption of these responsibilities, continues to manage Pharmacy

Department in accordance with the guidelines and regulations of

JCAHO, NYS Department of Health, US Department of Health, the US

Department of Treasury, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the State

Board of Pharmacy, the US Department of Justice Drug Enforcement

Administration and other regulatory authorities, including the written

policies and procedures of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and the

Pharmacy Department.

  • Supervises Drug Distribution Systems:

a. Administratively – defines goal of this function within the

framework of hospital goals and policies; coordinates

department activities with other health-team members; develops

standards of performance, evaluates performance and takes

corrective action.

b. Supervisory – supervises the performance of certain tasks which

may be carried out by staff members under supervision, such as:

drug prepacking, dose bin filling, control drug preparation, billing,

record keeping, packaging orders, compounding of drugs, etc.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of personnel selection,

performance and discipline. Develops an orientation program for new

personnel using hospital and departmental orientation guidelines and

appropriate training manuals.

  • Delegates responsibilities and authority while maintaining necessary

controls and accountability. Develops work systems describing

programming and coordinating the jobs; may develop job description for

new positions.

  • Coordinates and maintains harmonious and reciprocal relationships,

both intra and inter-departmental.

  • Oversees the application of written departmental policies to specific work

situations.

  • Ensures safe and efficient use of all department equipment such as:

laminar air-flow hood, torsion balances, marking machines, pill counter,

etc.

  • Coordinates the preparation of injectable medication when manufactured

in the hospital and the manufacture of extemporaneously-compounded

pharmaceutical, including adequate documentation for materials used in

the bulk compounding worksheet.

  • Supervises the inspection of pharmaceutical supplies on all services in

accordance with standards of JCAHO; provides adequate

documentation of full compliance.

  • Ensures the maintenance of an approved stock of antidotes and other

emergency drugs.

  • Procedures, stores and dispenses tax-free alcohol in accordance with all

regulation of the Alcohol, tobacco and Firearms Division of the US

Treasury Service.

  • Ensures specifications both as to quality and source for purchase of

drugs, chemicals and biologicals used in the treatment of patients.

Cooperates with the Director in planning, organizing and directing the

purchase-inventory control system. Maintains adequate stock levels of

all drugs and supplies. Negotiates with suppliers for best possible prices

and places all purchase orders. Reviews receipt of all materials and

prepares returns for outdated or unacceptable drugs.

  • Establishes and maintains, in cooperation with the Director of Pharmacy

and the Department of Fiscal Affairs, a satisfactory system of records

and bookkeeping charging patients for drugs and for maintaining control

of the requisitioning and dispensing of drugs.

  • Coordinates the dispensing of all narcotic drugs; maintains perpetual

inventory and performs periodic physical inventories, with the Director as

mandated by Law.

  • Coordinates continuing education program and in-service education for

staff pharmacists, such as: journal clubs, research projects or

assignments, periodic educational quiz programs, programmed-learning

experiences and staff conferences.

  • Assists the Director in implementing the decisions of the Pharmacy and

Therapeutics Committee and the Medical Board.

  • Prepares periodic reports on the progress and operation of the

department.

  • Responsible for serving as preceptor/mentor for Pharmacy

Residents/Students.

  • Participate in continuing education programs and preceptor

development programs.
Qualifications:

  • New York State Pharmacist License required.
  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Supervisory experience in Hospital Pharmacy.
  • Graduate of accredited pharmacy school.
  • Bronx, New York, United States
