Dual Fuel - Controls Engineering Commissioning Specialist

Dual Fuel isn't a typical mechanical contractor—we're a fully integrated energy solutions provider. We design, install, control, and service the heating systems we deploy, and all of our teams work under one roof. Welders, plumbers, pipefitters, controls engineers, and service technicians collaborate directly with each other, eliminating the disconnect and finger-pointing that often happens between trades.

We specialize in energy-efficient upgrades for multifamily buildings across the NYC metro area, helping owners reduce operating costs while improving comfort and reliability for residents. Because we install, service, and control our own equipment, you get to see your controls work operate in real-world conditions—closing the loop from design to performance. There are no handoffs to outside contractors; the entire workflow stays within one coordinated team.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to creating technology, not just deploying it. Our Axxon platform—our own in-house controls ecosystem—is constantly being expanded and refined. As part of our controls and commissioning team, you'll help shape the user interface, improve analytics and alarm logic, and advance integrations across the building automation landscape using BACnet, Modbus, and Project Haystack.

At Dual Fuel, you won't just implement technology—you'll help build it.

What You'll Do

Technical & Commissioning Responsibilities

  • Program and commission DDC systems using Node-RED on our in-house Axxon edge controllers, Easy-IO controllers, and CPT Tools
  • Integrate systems via BACnet and Modbus with third-party BMS platforms
  • Implement Project Haystack tagging for semantic data modeling
  • Work hands-on at control panels to troubleshoot I/O, wire field devices, and verify proper operation
  • Develop and implement sequences of operations for boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, and related HVAC systems
  • Commission systems from startup through optimization—including PID tuning, system balancing, and performance verification
  • Diagnose system issues across both mechanical and controls domains
  • Produce as-builts, points lists, drawings, and commissioning reports
  • Provide technical support to the service team for existing installations across 250+ multifamily sites

Product Development & Innovation

  • Contribute real-world insights to guide the Axxon platform roadmap
  • Collaborate with software engineers to improve system dashboards, visualizations, and user experience
  • Refine and improve alarm logic based on field performance
  • Test and validate new platform features in live environments
  • Influence product direction through hands-on commissioning experience

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate teams of electrical installers during controls installations
  • Manage and schedule field work to ensure high-quality, on-time execution
  • Conduct quality-control reviews prior to commissioning
  • Train and mentor installers on wiring, I/O terminations, and device installation
  • Work closely with plumbing foremen to ensure seamless mechanical–controls integration
  • Communicate project status to management and coordinate resources across multiple job sites
  • Review and approve DDC installation work before startup

What You Have

Required Technical Skills

  • 4–5 years of HVAC controls engineering and building automation experience
  • Strong DDC programming abilities in block-based or visual environments (Node-RED, Niagara, etc.)
  • Experience integrating systems via BACnet and/or Modbus
  • Hands-on experience working at control panels, wiring I/O, and troubleshooting hardware
  • Solid understanding of HVAC control fundamentals: PID, binary/analog I/O, sequences of operation, and logic
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems (boilers, chillers, pumps, valves, VFDs, dampers, sensors)
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and P&IDs

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor technicians
  • Strong organizational and project-coordination skills
  • Excellent communication abilities across trades and internal teams
  • Problem-solver who can bridge engineering design with field realities
  • Passion for controls work and continuous improvement
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for NYC-area job sites

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Node-RED or similar flow-based tools
  • Knowledge of Project Haystack or semantic data standards
  • Experience with Easy-IO controllers
  • Deep understanding of BACnet objects and services
  • Familiarity with multifamily building systems and energy-efficiency strategies
  • Experience with Con Edison rebates and supporting technical documentation
  • Background in commissioning commercial HVAC systems
  • Prior supervisory experience in controls or electrical installation
  • Open-source contributions or forum participation related to controls
  • Technical diploma or degree in HVAC, Controls, Electrical, Computer Science, or related fields
  • Industry certifications (Niagara, Tridium, BACnet, or manufacturer-specific)

What Makes Us Different

  • True R&D opportunity: Help design dashboards, refine alarm logic, and influence platform features.
  • Modern tools: Work with Node-RED and open standards—not outdated proprietary languages.
  • Protocol-agnostic: Integrate across BACnet, Modbus, and Haystack for true interoperability.
  • Full-stack ownership: From equipment to dashboards, from wiring to cloud data—you touch the entire system.
  • Hands-on leadership: Guide installers while staying deeply technical in the field.
  • No finger-pointing: You commission systems built by the same in-house team that installed them.
  • Real-world impact: Your work directly affects how hundreds of multifamily buildings consume energy.
  • For true controls people: If you get excited about tuning loops or reading BACnet specs, you'll thrive here.
  • Collaborative innovation: Work alongside software developers, mechanical teams, and field technicians who care about getting it right.
