Atlas Pain and Spine is seeking a versatile VSD Technician with the flexibility to support essential clinical duties—such as managing outgoing referrals—during downtime, helping keep the practice running smoothly.

Vital Systems Diagnostic (VSD) Technician Responsibilities

This position will function as a Vital Systems Diagnostic (VSD) Technician. The VSD role involves performing specialized diagnostic tests used to monitor cardiovascular function and neuropathies commonly associated with pain conditions. The VSD Technician will collaborate closely with providers who identified patients who meet testing criteria based on insurance guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Verify insurance approval for all scheduled VSD tests prior to the patient's appointment, and follow up on any pending authorizations.
  • Confirm patient appointments the day before and review preparation instructions.
  • Screen for any changes in insurance coverage or health status that could impact testing eligibility (e.g., insulin pumps, implanted devices, or other contraindications).
  • Communicate promptly with providers or administrative staff if a patient must be rescheduled or if testing cannot be completed.
  • Perform all approved VSD diagnostic tests with accuracy and adherence to established protocols.
  • Ensure proper patient preparation, education, and comfort before and during testing.
  • Document findings, upload test results, and maintain accurate and timely records in the EHR.
  • Review provider-approved test results with patients, explain next steps, and assist with coordinating recommended follow-up care.
  • Support efficient clinical workflow by assisting front desk staff and other medical assistants as needed.

Medical Assistant Responsibilities

Along with VSD testing duties, this position includes core Medical Assistant responsibilities that support the daily clinical flow of the practice. These duties include:

  • Answering incoming phone calls to assist patients with questions, scheduling needs, or care coordination.
  • Creating accurate tasks/messages within the EHR and routing them to the appropriate staff or provider.
  • Documenting all telephone calls accurately in the EHR and ensuring clear communication across the care team.
  • Managing the outgoing referral box by verifying that referral facilities have received necessary documentation, confirming that patients are scheduled and attend their appointments, and obtaining follow-up notes for provider review.
  • Educating patients on their treatment plans as directed by the provider.
  • Completing appropriate forms for prior authorizations and assisting with insurance-related requirements.
  • Maintaining strict patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Supporting front desk and clinical teams with communication, scheduling, and workflow needs as required.
  • Maintaining professionalism, efficiency, and a patient-centered approach in all interactions.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency with computers (typing, data entry, uploading documents)
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR)
  • Scheduling or coordination experience preferred

Educational/Training/Experience Requirements:

  1. High school education or G.E.D. equivalent, prior medical assistant experience in a medical practice or completion of a medical assistant program.

  2. 1-2 years prior experience as a medical assistant in a medical practice is preferred.

  3. Possesses the sense of discipline to work in accordance with accepted clinical standards.

  4. Comply with all regulatory requirements including OSHA, maintenance of clinical skills and certifications, etc.

  5. Be capable of dealing tactfully and effectively with patients, family members, other employees and physicians.

  6. Accurate computer scheduling skills.

Working Conditions and Essential Physical Demands:

Physical Demands:

  • Lifting Requirements: Assisted: 100+ lbs.
  • Frequency of Lifting: 0-25% of the time
  • Pushing Requirements: 200+ lbs.

Average percent of time during regular shift devoted to:

  • Walking, Squatting, Sitting, Bending, Reaching: 25%
  • Standing: 75%
  • ​Position requires individual to be dressed in uniform 100% of time; 75% of time individual will be required to wear protective equipment including rubber gloves, face mask or lead apron.

Benefit Conditions:

  • Benefits start after 60 days of employment

Supervisor:

  • Physician/Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, Lead MA, Practice Manager

Work schedule:

  • Monday - Thursday
  • 7:30am - 5:30pm
  • **Some Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm

This position does require travel to our other office located in Richmond when needed.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $ $15.50 per hour
