SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Manager, Vehicle Maintenance or Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, the Vehicle Mechanic I performs skilled work involving minor maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of school buses and related auto equipment, machinery, and tools. This position contributes to efficient and effective division operations and is responsible for maintaining accurate records of maintenance,1 repairs, and inventory.
DISTINGUISHING CAREER FEATURES
Vehicle Mechanic I functions at the trainee/entry level, performing minor maintenance and repair work on district vehicles and conducting inspections of a routine nature. As more experience is gained, incumbents may perform moderately complex work independently and more difficult work under the direct guidance and supervision of a senior-level mechanic or supervisor. Advancement in this classification requires additional training in gas, diesel, mechanical, compressed natural gas (CNG), and electrical equipment maintenance and repair, as well as progressively responsible experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform diagnostic tests on failed, malfunctioning, or broken-down vehicles and equipment to determine appropriate repairs and maintenance.
- Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled minor mechanic work, repairing, servicing, and adjusting engine and automobile parts, such as hydraulic controls, air compressors, transmissions, carburetors, and electrical systems.
- Inspect, adjust, and repair brakes, steering mechanisms, transmissions, and clutches; tune engines and perform a variety of other maintenance and repair work on automobiles and related mechanical equipment.
- Inspect and test vehicle and equipment lighting systems; adjust headlights; and repair and replace defective wiring, fuses, and switches.
- Lubricate vehicles and equipment; change oil and filters; and check tires, batteries, and fluid levels.
- Inspect, adjust, and repair a wide variety of power-driven equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and inventory.
- Operate a variety of tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of: Methods, techniques, and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Operation and maintenance of a variety of tools and equipment used in vehicle and equipment repair. Diagnostic testing and troubleshooting techniques. Safety practices and procedures related to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Basic computer skills.
- Ability to: Perform a variety of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair tasks. Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle and equipment problems. Operate a variety of tools and equipment safely and effectively. Read and interpret technical manuals and diagrams. Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Work independently and as part of a team.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A valid California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.
- The ability to obtain an appropriate California Commercial Driver's License is required, and all required endorsements within six months after appointment.
- The ability to obtain an appropriate California Special Driver Certificate to transport pupils in a school bus within six months after appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid First Aid Certificate is required within six months after appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Forklift Certificate is required within six months after appointment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Completion of the twelfth grade, high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- One year of experience performing servicing, maintenance, and minor repair of vehicles for an agency, company, or organization; OR one year of experience as a Vehicle Service Worker with the Clovis Unified School District.
- Specialized training in automotive repair is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed within a shop environment and outdoors in the field.
- Perform active physical labor.
- Maintain ambulatory ability and cardiovascular fitness to engage in strenuous physical labor, including lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 75 pounds frequently.
- Reach from awkward positions and use hand-eye coordination to insert parts and climb and balance.
- Possess sufficient visual acuity and hearing capabilities.
- Work involves significant health and safety considerations due to physical labor and the use of specialized equipment.
- Conditions may be unpleasant and uncomfortable due to physical positions and/or environmental extremes.
- Exposure to gases, exhaust, fumes, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
- Employees may be required to wear personal protective equipment.
