Job Summary

The Nurse Manager assists the Director of Nursing Operations and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day clinical and administrative operations of the nursing float department. This role ensures high-quality patient care through effective leadership, staff development, and compliance with healthcare regulations. The Nurse Manager collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, including those in all Vandalia Health North (VHN) facilities, to promote a safe, efficient, and compassionate environment for patients and staff.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

Leadership and Staff Management: Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff. Create staff schedules and ensure adequate coverage. Collaborate with leaders within the VHN facilities to manage inpatient multicampus float staff scheduling and competencies. Manage hiring, onboarding, and disciplinary processes. Promote teamwork and professional development.

Patient Care and Safety: Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. Monitor patient outcomes and implement improvement plans as needed. Serve as a clinical resource and escalate issues appropriately. Promote infection control and patient safety protocols.

Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in audits, quality assurance, and risk management initiatives. Address the performance and quality of care provided by the nursing float department to maintain a high standard of care. Address patient complaints and resolve service issues in a timely manner.

Collaboration and Communication: Coordinate with department leaders to facilitate adequate staffing and safe quality patient care. Coordinate with the education department for continuing professional development to maintain a high standard of clinical competencies within the department and required certifications and licensure. Represent the unit in leadership meetings. Communicate effectively with staff via email, in-person and phone conversations, and during monthly staff meetings.

Job-Specific: Well-rounded clinical background with an emphasis on adult acute care patient populations. Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications and email to manage day-to-day operations and communications. Proficient use of electronic health records.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Minimum 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting is required.

Minimum two years in a leadership or supervisory role is required.

Strong leadership and organizational abilities.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking.
