Summary:

The Risk Coordinator - RN is to ultimately provide a safer hospital environment by mitigating or reducing risks for all individuals within the organization. Serves as a resource for all colleagues and providers on medic al /legal concerns. Investigates Event Reports and EMTALA related concerns and identifies major trending patterns. Analyzes allegations of claims and complaints against the organization, and corresponding documentation (including medical record review, security reports/video, etc.). Interviews employees, patients, families, and physicians for details of events. Documents chronological summaries of events and researches processes in a medical/legal perspective. Participates in the risk management reduction strategies and other loss control measures with the Executive Director – Quality, Risk & Mission Services.

The registered nurse (RN) is a professional nurse under the supervision and direction of the department manager/director . The RN works within the state defined scope of practice and adheres to department and hospital policies/procedures and regulatory requirements.

The Risk Coordinator - RN utilizes nursing process for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients . The care delivered is individualized and goal directed . The RN is responsible for the supervision of delegated tasks . The RN works cohesively and collaboratively with providers and other interdisciplinary health care team members to provide high quality and safe care .

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties of a Risk Coordinator - RN and/or Role Specific duties include:

  • Demonstrates leadership skills.

  • Creates and maintains a professional environment. Assists Executive Director and Division Vice-President in Developing and implementing department's vision, values, and mission in order to fulfill FRHS mission . Recognizes personal leadership style and adapts to situations appropriately .

  • Establishes and applies problem solving skills . Works well with others in a team environment . Operates in a constructive manner.

  • Understands the RCA process.

  • Understands the Incident Reporting System workflows.

  • Demonstrates organization and time management skills.

  • Establishes and applies delegation skills.

  • Establishes and applies conflict resolution skills . Attempts to work with staff to resolve interpersonal conflicts.

  • Establishes and applies negotiation skills.

  • Proactively Tracks and Trends Incidents

  • Provides timely reports to appropriate departments on the identification of trends and works cooperatively with departments to address incidents using RCA and other risk mitigation strategies Provides administrator oversight for the policy management system. Demonstrates administrative responsibilities.

  • Creates a customer-focused environment . Develops and revises policies/procedures as needed . Demonstrates program development skills/educational opportunities . Demonstrates organizational skills. Conducts regular meetings effectively . Communicates information from director to employees. Follows established policy and procedures. Demonstrates skills in planning and development, measuring, assessing, and improving organizational performance. Exhibits a broad range of knowledge in continuous performance improvement theory, concepts, and skills, accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, licensure requirements, risk management, infection control, utilization management and health information fundamentals. Serves as a "change agent" within the FRHS Organization and is effective in the change process. Other Duties Regularly participate s in continuing education . Demonstrates skill with and an ability to facilitate ongoing information management techniques such as analysis, data reporting and computer use. Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Quality, Risk & Mission Services , VP of Quality and Performance Improvement, Chief Medical Officer, or the Chief Executive Officer in an effective, timely and professional manner. Maintain a working knowledge of compliance activities.

  • Actively endorses and promotes performance improvement and Lean techniques within all areas of responsibility and on an organization-wide basis .

  • Identifies and implements suggestions for improving services, working relationships and the work environment through appropriate channels .

  • Consistently works in a cooperative and proactive manner with all department directors/service line managers and departments to facilitate resolution of identified opportunities for process improvement.

  • Accountable for keeping the Executive Director – Quality, Risk & Mission Services informed of all critical issues and progress made on assigned tasks.

Consistently provides follow-through and accountability for all assignments given by the Executive Director – Quality, Risk & Mission Services , FRHS Executive Team or CEO.

Hours will be dependent on patient census and workload. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include after-hours and weekends as necessary.

The requirements listed below must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required .

EDUCATION (Minimum Requirements for Position ):

Graduate of an accredited school of nursingrequired.

Bachelor's Degreerequired.

Master's Degreepreferred.

CERTIFICATE S , LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license or temporary permitfrom the State of Nebraska required.

Previous Experience Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:

Previous clinical experiencerequired.

Previous management experiencepreferred.

Experience working on LEAN projects in a healthcare settingpreferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience of healthcareperformance improvement activities, principles of quality, measurement, statistical evaluation and analysis, team

facilitation, and organizational behavior preferred.

Skills/Knowledge Requirements:

Language Skills – Ability to read, write, speak, and understandthe English language required.
