About The Role
The Staff Engineer role at Cohere Health is a pivotal position responsible for defining and executing the technical vision of the Data Platform team. This individual will lead the design and development of scalable, reliable, and business-aligned data infrastructure, partnering closely with cross-functional teams including data engineers, architects, product managers, and business stakeholders.
The role demands a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise who can influence platform-wide standards and guide complex engineering challenges. As a technical leader, the Staff Engineer will own the long-term roadmap for the data platform, ensuring it supports current needs while being adaptable for future growth. Additionally, this position involves mentoring engineering teams, evaluating emerging technologies, and championing engineering rigor through documentation, testing, and incident prevention. The role offers a fully remote working environment with minimal travel, providing an excellent opportunity for experienced data engineering professionals to impact healthcare at scale and contribute to innovative solutions that improve patient care and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering or related fields
- Proven expertise in designing and operating large-scale data infrastructure in cloud-based, distributed environments such as AWS, EMR, Glue, Kafka, Iceberg, or dbt
- Deep understanding of modern data architecture patterns including medallion/lakehouse models, schema evolution, streaming ingestion, and batch orchestration
- Strong knowledge of observability, CI/CD pipelines, version control, and incident management in data engineering contexts
- Experience shaping engineering standards, frameworks, or libraries used across multiple teams
- Exceptional communication skills to articulate technical strategies to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven leadership and mentorship capabilities within engineering teams
- Experience working with healthcare data such as claims or electronic medical records (preferred)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline
- Ability to work fully remotely with approximately 5% travel
Responsibilities
- Define and lead architectural strategy and technical design across multiple squads, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with business goals
- Own the long-term technical roadmap for the Data Platform, balancing immediate requirements with future-proofing for growth
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor, guiding decisions on data storage formats, processing frameworks, and platform capabilities
- Drive cross-team initiatives such as observability frameworks, data contract enforcement, and schema governance
- Continuously evaluate platform reliability, maintainability, and cost-efficiency, implementing automation and scalable design patterns to reduce manual effort
- Promote engineering best practices through comprehensive documentation, rigorous testing, operational readiness, and incident prevention strategies
- Mentor and coach engineers across teams, providing technical guidance, architectural support, and career development opportunities
- Evaluate emerging technologies and tools to enhance platform performance, security, developer experience, and total cost of ownership
- Collaborate with stakeholders across analytics, clinical, product, and operations teams to ensure the platform meets evolving business needs
- Design and develop self-service tooling and frameworks to enable operational, analytics, and engineering teams to efficiently access governed data assets
- Participate in planning, roadmap alignment, and backlog refinement to ensure technical work supports business priorities and accelerates cross-functional progress
- Define and monitor KPIs related to platform reliability, performance, and engineering efficiency
- Participate in on-call rotations, supporting continuous improvements in platform resilience, recovery, and incident response
