Job Summary: As the Director of Controls Engineering, you will lead a multidisciplinary team in the development, testing, and deployment of control systems for custom automation and material handling solutions. Your role includes supporting the entire project lifecycle from pre-sales engineering efforts, standardizing controls and electrical designs across product lines, and collaborating closely with manufacturing and integration teams to support control panel fabrication, factory acceptance testing, and field installations. You will ensure project success, making sure that all project and program KPIs are maintained, all projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and exceed customer expectations. In addition, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining documentation, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and developing standard operating procedures and quality checks. As a key leader at LogistiQ, you will foster a high-performance team culture, build cross-functional connections, and model ethical and collaborative behavior. You will also coordinate with global engineering resources, ensure technical accuracy and timely decisions, and provide critical support to manufacturing through engineering changes, BOMs, routings, and technical guidance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As the Director of Controls Engineering, you will provide strategic leadership and vision for the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of control systems across LogistiQ's automation and material handling solutions. You will shape the long-term controls strategy, influence enterprise-wide engineering decisions, and ensure alignment with corporate objectives. This role requires deep technical expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to lead global engineering initiatives with precision and impact. You will serve as a key advisor to executive leadership, drive innovation across product lines, and champion a culture of excellence, accountability, and growth.
People Leadership & Organizational Alignment

Electrical Design & Standards Development
Own the full spectrum of electrical design, from hardware selection (PLCs, drives, sensors, safety components) to panel layouts and detailed wiring schematics.
Standardize design practices across platforms to enhance scalability, safety, and quality across all controls systems.
Establish best-in-class documentation, including BOMs, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to ensure repeatability and accuracy.
Lead design governance, managing ECNs, document control, and drafting standards to maintain engineering discipline and drive efficiency.
Lead efforts to modularize existing control code and system designs, enabling rapid deployment, easy maintenance, and scalable product architecture across projects.
Project & Controls System Leadership
Lead the end-to-end execution of custom controls systems for conveyor and material handling solutions, ensuring seamless integration of hardware, layout, and system design.
Translate specs into execution by interpreting schematics and customer requirements, and clearly communicating solutions across internal and external stakeholders.
Own project outcomes—ensuring all controls deliverables meet quality, cost, and timeline targets while aligning with customer expectations and safety standards.
Support early-stage engineering by partnering with sales and applications teams to evaluate feasibility, guide hardware strategy, and shape winning system concepts.
Develop and communicate a compelling controls engineering roadmap that aligns with future product growth, operational efficiency goals, and LogistiQ's long-term vision.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Manufacturing Support
Work hand-in-hand with manufacturing to ensure precision in panel builds, wiring, and component layout—supporting quality and efficiency from the shop floor to the field.
Provide real-time engineering support during product launches and updates, troubleshooting technical issues and ensuring BOMs, routings, and documentation are production-ready.
Bridge the gap between engineering and operations, aligning teams around schedules, deliverables, and production readiness to maintain executional momentum.
Process Ownership & Continuous Improvement
Lead improvement initiatives that enhance system performance, design efficiency, hardware selection, and long-term serviceability of products.
Own critical engineering processes, from ECNs and design releases to document control and drafting standards—ensuring precision, consistency, and compliance.
Make confident, timely decisions, backed by internal standards and expert input, to remove roadblocks and accelerate engineering throughput.
Drive innovation initiatives, including concept development, IP identification, and collaboration with R&D teams to influence long-term controls strategy and platform architecture.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Oversee daily engineering workflows, ensuring teams stay focused, aligned, and productive.
Support hiring and onboarding of new team members, providing training that accelerates integration and performance.
Deliver meaningful feedback through structured evaluations, while managing performance, discipline, and growth in partnership with HR and company policy.
Travel Demands:
40% Travel to customer sites.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
Proficiency in creating and reviewing electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or equivalent.
Deep knowledge of industrial hardware selection including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, safety components, sensors, relays, and circuit protection.
Deep domain knowledge of NEC, Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery, and UL regulatory compliance.
Understanding of control panel fabrication processes and wiring best practices.
Experience supporting manufacturing processes, BOM generation, ECN processes, and product release documentation.
Expert in multiple PLCs (AB is primary), HMIs, and other controls software.
Competent communicator of both technical and nontechnical information to large groups of cross functional colleagues.
Ability to maintain positive and professional working relationships with all staff at all levels of organization.
Skilled at providing insightful, accurate, data or experience driven technical peer review in the design process.
Cable of deploying a team of resources to complete multiple projects on time with high accuracy.
Education and Experience:
PhD in Controls, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical Engineering field.
20+ years of experience in controls or electrical engineering, with a proven track record of strategic leadership and innovation.
Minimum of 15 years in a senior leadership role, including experience leading cross-functional engineering teams and driving enterprise-level initiatives.
Computer Skills:
Highly Skilled with Auto CAD Electrical and/or E-Plan
Highly Skilled with Rockwell Studio 5000
Proficient in Microsoft Excel
Physical Demands:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Work Environment:
The work environment is pleasant, temperature controlled, professional office environment in a manufacturing setting. The employee works in an office setting but does have frequent interaction with the shop floor. On the shop floor, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed and the air temperature fluctuates with the seasonal weather.
