SMX is seeking Intelligence Technical Writers to support mission readiness by producing, reviewing, and maintaining high-quality technical and procedural documentation in support of national defense and intelligence operations. This role translates complex systems, methods, and procedures into clear, concise, and operationally effective documentation for diverse audiences—including operators, analysts, and leadership.  The ideal candidate will bring a balance of technical depth and editorial precision, with the ability to communicate complex information efficiently and effectively.

This is position requires a DoD TS/SCI security clearance which requires US citizenship for work on DoD contracts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with engineers, developers, and production teams to accurately capture system functions, maintenance procedures, operating standards, and product integration across multiple mission-critical programs
  • Develop and maintain manuals, reports, proposals, briefs, catalogs, and standard operating procedures to support installation, operation, and maintenance of systems and technologies
  • Study blueprints, sketches, specifications, production activities, and technical data to determine relevant operating procedures and technology functions Interview subject matter experts to extract technical insights
  • Collaborate with analysts, operators, and technical SMEs to extract key mission details and document them in structured formats
  • Draft, edit, and finalize documentation that aligns with established guidelines for clarity, terminology, and structure
  • Ensure written content supports end-user needs and mission objectives
  • Review and revise existing publications for accuracy, relevance, and completeness Recommend changes to improve documentation effectiveness, format, and delivery methods
  • Select and integrate diagrams, charts, sketches, or photos to enhance reader understanding Assist with layout, formatting, duplication, and dissemination of materials as required
  • Maintain documentation repositories, version history, and records of edits Ensure consistent formatting and traceability of published content
  • Develop public affairs material, employee communications, and other written content as assigned, including speeches and press releases, when needed
  • Develop and maintain documentation supporting intelligence systems, platforms, or tools—including system overviews, maintenance guides, and user instructions

Required Skills & Experience

  • Required clearance: TS/SCI
  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of 4 years of experience in technical writing, intelligence analysis, or related field, preferably within a DoD or IC mission environment
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written intelligence reports, assessments, and technical documentation tailored for senior leaders and operational decision-makers
  • Experience synthesizing technical and operational data into actionable written products supporting mission planning and execution
  • Excellent command of grammar, style, and clarity, with a track record of preparing intelligence products, white papers, or briefings under tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with classified document handling, reporting standards
  • Proven experience supporting Intelligence and National Security missions through technical writing, analytical reporting, or documentation of operational procedures
  • Experience doing situation updates, SOPs, or technical briefs delivered to senior military or interagency leadership
  • Experience writing for both classified and unclassified audiences while adhering to security guidelines and review processes
  • Comfortable working in high-tempo, multidisciplinary environments with evolving priorities and operational constraints
