Description

The Cary Senior Center is seeking energetic and creative individuals who are enthusiastic about giving back to the community with an emphasis on serving the senior population to join our team as a Program Assistant II.

This position will play a big role in providing exemplary customer service to citizens visiting or contacting the Senior Center, who serves a very diverse clientele. Not only do we serve all ages and abilities, but also many different cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities. We seek applicants who are comfortable with, sensitive to, and interested in working with patrons 55+ from all walks of life.

Work in this role will involve entering accurate program registration data into a computer, processing customer inquiries, handling general office duties, and developing marketing materials. Other responsibilities will include assisting with facility rental bookings and routine clerical and administrative duties.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a community supervisor and senior program assistant.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

This position requires a flexible schedule with daytime availability, and some weekends and evenings as needed.?

Typical Tasks
  • Proactively identifies facility needs and suggests solutions
  • Serves as a first point of contact in reception, answers telephone, and greets the public in person
  • Communicates with patrons to address concerns
  • Provides Town information and materials to citizens or redirects the citizen to the appropriate staff
  • Notifies patrons of cancelations, changes, or updates
  • Operates standard office equipment
  • Follows up with supervisor and/or program assistant as needed
  • Enforces Town of Cary policies and procedures
  • Opens and/or closes and secures the facility when assigned
  • Operates computer; computer work may be extensive
  • Registers citizens for Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources programs
  • Maintains citizen accounts

  • Work special events

  • Sells items through Point of Service and performs basic accounting for money received through the cash register
  • Assists patrons with registration system
  • Educates citizens on the Center offerings
  • Maintains office files
  • Gathers and distributes mail daily
  • Processes accurate deposits within established deadlines
  • Troubleshoots problems and issues
  • Updates facility display boards
  • Light housekeeping as needed
  • Enforces Town of Cary and Senior Center specific rules and policies
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of computers and related software
  • General knowledge of standard office practices and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline
  • Skill in the operation of common office equipment
  • Ability to interact with the public tactfully and constructively and provide top-notch customer service
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish productive working relationships with others
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the center and preserve, division and department
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:

  • Some experience with responsible administrative work.
  • Some experience with Microsoft programs (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

Physical Requirements

Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to interact with patrons. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 40 lbs.) Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment. Work in this class is primarily clerical and may require sitting and use of a computer for extended time periods.

Conditions of Employment

Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
