The Downtown Baker campus ED is a 43 bed state of the art Emergency department that was recently renovated. We foster teamwork and collaboration with our ED providers. Education is important to us as we offer a number of classes for our team for example TNCC, ENPC as well as the opportunity to obtain and maintain 2 certifications.

JOB SUMMARY

The Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse and is responsible for using practical knowledge and skills to work effectively with other staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides defined aspects of care to Emergency Department patients, following nursing/physician/provider order.

  • Manages a patient care assignment based on patient acuity and staffing needs.

  • Receives reports from previous team members and completes tasks in a timely manner.

  • Responds timely to all patient requests and communicates to the appropriate nurse/physician/provider when appropriate.

  • Enters timely and accurate documentation into the electronic medical record.

  • Demonstrates and maintains annual competencies.

  • Assists with emergent resuscitations and responds to Code Blues in the inpatient setting when necessary.

  • Assists clinicians with emergent procedures.

  • Inputs accurate data into the EKG machine prior to completing procedure and immediately presents review to the attending physician.

  • Performs phlebotomy per policy. Collects and completes Urine Drug Screens and maintains chain of custody of specimen.

  • Maintains and orders supplies and equipment, replenishing both on an ongoing basis throughout the assigned shift, in a fast-effective manner.

  • Maintains clean examination rooms and safe work environment/equipment as evidenced by proper handling of contaminated supplies/equipment, I.E. emptying trash/linen bags in Department as needed.

  • Collects, labels, and/or delivers urine, blood, sputum, and stool specimens to the lab, as directed, and utilizing Universal Precautions.

  • Applies orthopedic splints under direction of the Registered Nurse/Physician/Provider and documents in the electronic medical record.

  • Assists with the application of simple dressings, utilizing aseptic technique.

  • Assists the nursing staff with patient admission/discharge/transfers and reports to the Helipad upon request of the charge nurse. Assists patients who arrive by EMS, police, and private vehicle.

  • Accurately performs glucometer finger stick. Accurately performs ED POCT. Performs quality control on all waive tests.

  • Performs venipuncture following hospital protocol.

  • Properly fits patients for crutches and instructs gait training.

  • Provides post-mortem care.

  • Assists Clinicians or Public Safety with the application of restraints when applicable in the care of a violent/combative patient.

  • Precepts new ED Technicians and EMS students.

  • Transport patients to other areas of the hospital as needed.

  • Acts a patient sitter when one to one observation is required for patient care.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of High School or GED required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

  • Valid Licensure as a Florida EMT, Paramedic, Clinical Tech (CNA) in the State of Florida with acute care experience required.

  • Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, and input data.
