Summary
The
PACS Integration Engineer
is responsible for the design, administration, and continuous improvement of the organization's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and related imaging systems. This highly technical role focuses on
HL7 and DICOM interface development
, ensuring successful integrations and interface deployments across radiology, EHR, and third-party systems.
The position combines strong engineering, interoperability, and problem-solving skills to maintain system reliability, compliance, and performance within a 24x7 clinical environment.
Essential Job Functions
System Integration & Development
- Architect, implement, and support HL7 and DICOM integrations between PACS, RIS, EMR/EHR, VNA, and third-party systems.
- Develop and maintain interface logic using tools such as Mirth Connect.
- Create scripts using JavaScript and PostgreSQL to modify and integrate HL7 message data.
System Administration & Support
- Work with the PACS support specialists to ensure proper alignment with deployments, configurations, and testing.
- Administer and maintain PACS and related imaging applications, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.
- Troubleshoot and resolve imaging workflow issues, network errors, and interface exceptions.
- Oversee system performance, capacity, backup, and disaster recovery planning for imaging platforms.
- Provide tier-3 escalation and collaborate with internal and external teams to resolve issues.
- Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation.
Compliance & Security
- Ensure systems and integrations comply with HIPAA, HITRUST, and internal data-protection standards.
- Document configuration standards, change controls, and system inventories in platforms such as Confluence.
Collaboration & Projects
- Provide exceptional customer service to industry-leading hospitals and clinics.
- Partner with radiology, IT, and clinical leadership to align imaging technology with operational goals.
- Lead or participate in server upgrades, maintenance, and architectural overhauls.
- Manage vendor relationships and coordinate issue escalation or feature enhancements.
- Contribute to the organization's knowledge base by documenting lessons learned and workflow optimizations.
Training & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance to PACS Support Specialists and other IT staff.
- Conduct training sessions for clinical and technical users on imaging workflows and integration best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Health Informatics, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in PACS administration, healthcare integration, or radiology IT engineering.
- Strong technical knowledge of HL7 v2.x, DICOM standards, and clinical imaging workflows.
- Proficiency in Windows Server, SQL/PostgreSQL, networking (including TCP/IP troubleshooting, VPN and SSH deployments, firewalls).
- Experience with interface engines (Mirth Connect) and cloud-based imaging systems.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Scripting/programming in JavaScript.
- Familiarity with FHIR, DICOMweb.
- Familiarity with cloud provider best practices.
- Certifications such as CIIP, ITIL Foundation, or vendor-specific PACS credentials.
- Experience leading or contributing to enterprise imaging and interface modernization projects.
- Experience with OnePacs a plus.
Physical Requirements
This position involves sitting, typing, and working at a computer for extended periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities.
