JOB DESCRIPTION

CARPENTER II

Department: School Plants

Pay Grade: U109

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

This position performs intermediate skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation, and construction of wooden and related structures in school buildings. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision may be exercised over helpers.

  • Installs and maintains windows, locks, flooring, tile, and a variety of wooden structures.
  • Lays out work, estimates time and materials, designs projects, prepares material, and performs carpentry work.
  • Maintains, repairs, or replaces all locks.
  • Maintains door closers and panic bars.
  • Adapts locks and keys to mastering key system; re-keys locks and reproduces keys.
  • Resurfaces countertops.
  • Replaces quarry floor tile and stair tread.
  • Installs cover base molding.
  • Performs skilled carpentry repairs and masonry work.
  • Lays out and prepares cabinets and shelving units.
  • Hangs gutters and drain spouts.
  • Performs masonry functions.
  • Finishes concrete.
  • Builds ramps, steps, decks, porches, and handrails.
  • Makes and repairs window frames and sashes.
  • Makes and repairs partitions and covers with dry wall or paneling.
  • Installs, repairs and replaces flooring, tiles, ceiling systems, and windows.
  • Lays various types of floors and floor coverings.
  • Makes and repairs screens.
  • Patches and repairs roofs.
  • Operates all necessary woodworking equipment.
  • Constructs small buildings and additions, as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.

  • At least two years of experience in carpentry work.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

  • Knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.

  • Knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and electric methods, tools, and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of carpentry tools and wood working equipment.
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

  • The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
  • Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
