Park Superintendent
Reports To: Alabama Historic Ironworks Commission
FLSA Status: Full Time
Location: Offices at Tannehill Ironworks Historic State Park
Position Overview
The Park Superintendent will provide exemplary stewardship of Tannehill and Brierfield Historic Ironworks State Parks, ensuring staff, facilities, grounds, equipment, and vehicles receive outstanding care while delivering exceptional visitor experiences. This leadership role encompasses expertly managing all park operations such as camping, hiking, education, events, retail, and other essential park functions, while collaborating strategically with the Commission on special projects and general operational matters that arise from time to time. The position emphasizes working collaboratively with staff as a unified team to ensure a healthy, productive work environment is achieved, fostering professional growth and operational excellence. Additionally, the Park Superintendent will partner closely with the Commission to establish a strong foundation for continued park excellence and visitor satisfaction.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Oversight
- Direct and coordinate the operational upkeep of all park facilities, including visitor centers, restrooms, historic structures, and recreational areas.
- Ensure groundskeeping activities (lawn care, ground infrastructure, seasonal operations, and general maintenance) are properly managed and maintained.
- Oversee inspection and work orders for all park facilities, equip(emnt and vehicles.
- Establish clear priorities for urgent repairs and preventive maintenance.
Leadership & Employee Relations
- Work with staff as a team to ensure a healthy work environment is achieved, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
- Hold regular team meetings to share updates, recognize contributions, and address concerns.
- Mentor and guide staff members while facilitating positive workplace solutions.
- Offer guidance, encouragement, and mediation to team members as situations arise.
- Provide mentorship and facilitate collaborative problem-solving among staff.
- Provide supervisory guidance and facilitate resolution of operational challenges.
- Offer leadership support and mediate workplace issues to ensure optimal team performance.
Administration
- Executive head: As the executive head, the Superintendent directs and supervises all administrative and technical activities of the department.
- Staff management: Appoints and manages all employees, develops personnel policies, and ensures competent staff are in place.
- Budget and fiscal control: Directs and controls the department's expenditures in accordance with state financial procedures and ensures fiscal integrity.
- Policy and implementation: Develops and implements agency policies and procedures and oversees the execution of programs and initiatives.
Liaison and communication
- External relations: Serves as the principal liaison with other state and local agencies, federal government entities, and external partners.
- Public and media: Acts as the chief spokesperson for the agency, representing it to the media and the public.
- Legal liaison: Works with the Attorney General's office as a representative of the Commission.
Other key duties
- Strategic planning: Engages in strategic planning and works to advance the agency's mission.
- Legal and compliance: Ensures compliance with laws such as the Alabama Ethics Law and federal requirements like FMLA and ADA.
- Record keeping: Oversees the proper maintenance of agency records and the agency's Administrative Code.
- Emergency management: Coordinates emergency management activities, works with other agencies, and implements security policies.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Natural Resource Management, Public Administration, Hospitality Services, Business Management, or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and professional experience will be considered.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years in management or supervisory roles with demonstrated experience in operations oversight, which may include park operations, facility management, hospitality, retail management, municipal services, military leadership, or other relevant supervisory positions.
