Sonterra Municipal Utility District Pool Maintenance Technician

Hourly Range: $23.00 – $27.00, ($47,840-$56,160 a year) depending on experience
Type of Position: Full-Time; FLSA non-exempt

Position Summary:

The Pool Maintenance Technician for the Sonterra Municipal Utility District is responsible for the planning, coordination, and maintenance of the community pools, splash pads, and facilities in accordance with the Aquatic Department's budget and the district's established fiscal objectives. This position encompasses not only aquatic maintenance but also general facility upkeep throughout district properties. The role requires strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and meticulous attention to detail. The employee should show professionalism, take initiative in caring for the facilities, and stay dedicated to keeping all areas safe, up to code, and well-maintained to ensure a positive experience for Sonterra residents.

Organizational Relationships:

Reports to: Aquatic Manager

Other: Works closely with the district and other parks staff.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

  • Performs routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on pool equipment, including pumps, filters, heaters, and chemical feed systems.
  • Monitors and maintains proper chemical levels in the pool and splash pads to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Conducts regular pool cleaning, including skimming, vacuuming, and backwashing filters.
  • Inspects and repairs pool decks, tiles, and other structural elements as needed.
  • Responds promptly to pool-related emergencies and addresses issues such as leaks, equipment malfunctions, or water quality concerns.
  • Collaborates with other maintenance and facility staff to coordinate pool-related activities and ensure a seamless operation.
  • Keeps accurate records of pool maintenance activities, chemical usage, and equipment inspections.
  • Provides guidance, training and support to all aquatic personnel involved in day-to-day pool operations.
  • Stays informed about industry practices, safety regulations, and emerging trends in pool and splash pad maintenance.
  • Prepares and submits reports to effectively manage controls, efficiency, safety, and water quality.
  • Coordinates and establishes preventative maintenance program for MUD aquatic facilities.
  • Take out trash, cleans bathrooms and surrounding areas of the pool, parks & facilites.
  • Participates in the development of the operating and capital improvement budgets, including justifications for needed equipment, estimates of materials for preventative maintenance, repairs, upgrades, pool operations and supplies.
  • Communicate with vendors, order supplies, conduct inventories, and maintain purchase records.
  • Maintains compliancy and stays abreast of regulation changes as related to federal, state, and local codes and operating procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to meet and work well with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all Parks and Recreation Staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with many people with a variety of requests.
  • Knowledge of pool operation standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of contractual agreements for facility users.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perceive problem situations with user groups and implement immediate solutions.
  • Knowledge of principles, policies, and practices of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Equipment, Machines, Tools, and Work Aids:

  • Handles the filtration system and other aquatic operating systems.
  • Maintains proper pool chemical balance using chlorination and acid systems.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One full year of experience or two years of part-time experience in a pool technician and maintenance related field.
  • Must be knowledgeable in pool equipment, water chemistry and safety protocols
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair pool equipment and related systems.
  • Valid, Texas driver's license "or" if you currently have another state driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid TX driver's license within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain the below certifications within 60 days of hire-

Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or

Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions; extreme heat, cold, rain, wind and to chemicals used in cleaning and sanitation of the pools. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include- close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Hand/eye coordination must be sufficient to operate a computer, pool equipment and a motor vehicle.

Expected Hours of Work

Full time/40 hrs. weekly/Day shift/Some weekends and Holidays

On call may be required

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
