Position Summary
The SBA Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, structuring, and underwriting Small Business Administration (SBA) loan requests in accordance with internal credit policies, SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and prudent lending practices. This role ensures credit quality, regulatory compliance, and timely decision-making to support the success and growth of the SBA lending program. The underwriter collaborates closely with business development officers, members, and internal teams to deliver high-quality lending solutions that support small businesses.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Analysis & Underwriting
- Analyze financial statements, tax returns, global cash flow, personal financials, and projections for SBA 7(a), SBA 504, and USDA/B&I loans.
- Evaluate borrower creditworthiness, collateral adequacy, repayment capacity, and overall loan risk.
- Prepare detailed, well-supported credit memos including risk ratings, loan structure recommendations, and SBA eligibility determinations.
- Ensure accurate application of SBA SOP requirements including Standard, PLP, and Express processes.
Compliance & Documentation
- Verify borrower and project eligibility under SBA guidelines, including size standards, use of proceeds, and required equity contributions.
- Ensure all SBA forms, disclosures, and documentation comply with SBA and internal standards.
- Collaborate with closing teams to ensure all credit conditions and SBA requirements are met prior to loan funding.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SBA regulations, SOP updates, and industry best practices.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work with SBA Loan Officers, processors, and credit leadership to structure deals that mitigate risk and support member needs.
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally to internal partners.
- Provide guidance on SBA policy interpretation and credit structuring scenarios.
- Participate in loan committee presentations as needed.
Portfolio Support
- Assist with annual reviews, servicing actions, modifications, and ongoing monitoring of SBA loans.
- Identify early warning indicators and recommend proactive strategies to protect institutional assets.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in SBA or commercial lending.
- Strong working knowledge of SBA 7(a) and 504 programs, SOP requirements, and commercial credit principles.
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced financial analysis skills, including tax return review, financial spreading, and cash-flow evaluation.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex SBA regulatory guidelines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise credit memos.
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency with loan origination systems, financial analysis software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
