POSITION: Surgical Technician

DEPARTMENT: Clinical

SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of this position is to assist in providing nursing care of the surgical patient in the O.R. suite.

I. POSITION DUTIES

A. To utilize specialized knowledge of surgical techniques while giving direct and indirect patient care.

1. Demonstrates and adheres to principles of aseptic techniques.

2. Knowledgeable of all basic set-ups for surgical procedures.

3. Assists in ensuring patient safety.

B. To perform the tasks of the "scrub" role.

1. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques.

2. Assists in set up of operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.

3. Assists with the preparation, transportation, and monitoring of patients.

4. Arranges instruments according to routine for given procedure.

5. Handles instruments according to routine for given procedure.

6. Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.

7. Performs room clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties.

8. Provides assistance in emergency situations as directed.

9. Functions in the role of second assistant following successful skills demonstration.

C. To function efficiently as a member of the surgical team.

1. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, initiative, work relations, training needs).

2. Reviews physicians' preference cards and updates as needed.

3. Assists with stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

D. To support quality activities.

1. Develop communication skills and promote departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care.

2. Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.

3. Maintains current CPR certification.

II. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

A. Immediate Supervisor: Administrator

B. Positions to be supervised: None

III. CONTACT WITH OTHERS

A. Internal: Staff in Clinical Operations and Business Office

B. External: Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, Patients and Families, Representatives of Medical Industry.

IV. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

It is necessary to perform some overtime beyond regularly scheduled work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, some on-call duty may be required. Because of the nature of procedures in the O.R., this job can be stressful and hectic.

V. POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Physical and mental – 80% walking, standing, pushing, pulling, required to move patients. Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed. Must have a knowledge of operating room techniques; possess strong organization skills and flexibility; present good communication skills; present a professional image; and be able to handle periods of stress.

VI. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

The Operating Room Technician must be a High School graduate or have completed a GED course. In addition, successful completion of O.R. technician course and 2 years experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as function within a team; have a basic knowledge of surgical technique; assist in providing care for the surgical patient; and must possess the ability to handle stress.

Expected hours: No less than 16.0 per week
