    Position:      School Bus Mechanic - Technician

     

    Location:    Transportation Dept, Bus Garage

     

    Posting Date: December 9  to  December 21, 2025 – or Until Filled

     

    Reports To:     Director of Transportation

     

    Date of Employment: January 12, or as soon as possible after the hiring processes

     

    Work Schedule: Full-time (52 weeks/year, 40 hours/week)

     

    Starting Rate of Pay:     $ $32.75 per hour 

     

    Compensation: Competitive salary package, including Full Family benefits, Michigan's public school retirement system, paid vacation and holidays, and paid leave time. Specific salary to be determined based on experience and qualifications.

     

    Job Overview: The Bus Mechanic-Technician maintains and repairs the district's school bus and vehicle fleet so that all vehicles meet state safety and inspection standards. The role includes, but is not limited to, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, recordkeeping, and support for transportation staff to maintain safe and dependable transportation for students.

     

    Qualifications:   

    • High School Diploma or higher.

    • Advance technical training either through a trade school or college programs in gas, propane, and diesel vehicles.

    • Ability to diagnose mechanical and structural defects and perform corrective procedures without callbacks.

    • Must hold or be able to obtain a Michigan CDL-B (or A) with Passenger (P), School Bus (S) endorsements, Chauffeur's designation, and air brakes.

    • Ability to meet all qualifications of a Michigan School Bus Driver, including DOT physical and participation in random drug and alcohol testing.

    • Minimum of three (3) years experience as a bus mechanic/heavy truck mechanic preferred. 

    • Experience working on buses or trucks with newer emissions, components, and electrical systems.

    • Michigan State Police School Bus Inspector Certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 12 months.

    • Experience in performing a wide variety of repair tasks, to include diagnosing problems with the driver and school employees in a positive manner.

    • Certification by the State of Michigan as a Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic /Auto Certifications in the following areas: Electrical systems, Suspension and Steering; Brakes; Drive Trains; Diesel Engine Repair; Gasoline Engine Repair.

    • Must be able to pass a criminal record check, fingerprinting, and drug test.

     

    Essential Job Functions: 

    • Properly inspect district vehicles and related equipment for reported and unreported defects.

    • Properly diagnose defects from repair requests and make necessary corrections.

    • Perform all work that can be done more timely and cost effectively in house. Contract out only services which can be done more timely and cost effectively outside the district.

    • Must be able to multi-task and work on multiple projects at once

    • Work closely with bus drivers and the director relating to needed repairs.

    • Responsible for the correct and efficient installation of parts.

    • Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping, maintaining a clean and well organized garage.

    • Maintain accurate records in the computer program.

    • Do all paperwork and computer work related to each job.

    • Be on call for various unforeseen situations which may arise.

    • Order / purchase parts and supplies.

    • Assist with State Police inspections.

    • Perform acceptance inspections of all new vehicles to ensure that they meet the district's specifications.

    • Establish, execute, and document an effective minor, major, and preventative maintenance program.

    • Must be responsible for protecting school system property and securing the area.

    • Must be able to lift 50-80lbs

    • Attend training and meetings as requested or required.

    • Make service calls to buses on the road.

    • Able to furnish own hand tools.

    • Must have excellent computer skills.

    • Must have excellent communication skills both oral and written.

    • Ability to assume total responsibility of the transportation repair area with minimum supervision.

    • Must have a positive attitude.

    • Must be self-motivated.

    • Must be able to multi-task, with multiple projects at once.

    • Must be able to handle tight timelines making repairs under pressure.

    • Perform all other duties as assigned by the district.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust/focus.

     

    Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is loud to moderate.

     

    Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.

    Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Transportation Director or other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. 

     

    Equipment: Uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone. 

     

    Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings, to bus locations if needed, and to professional meetings as required.
