Job Duties:

T he Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) announces a Teaching Faculty position in E lementary and M iddle E ducation. This is a full-time (9 month) , renewable academic staff position to begin August 2026.

The individual will be an active member of the Elementary and Middle Education p rogram and contribute to the preparation of teachers for urban and diverse communities. They will teach undergraduate and post- baccalaureate courses, supervise preservice teachers in clinical experiences, have an on campus presence, engage in program work , and attend program and department meetings.

The individual must have knowledge and expertise to teach courses in general pedagogy and core content area methods and to link course material to clinical experiences. Teaching experience at the elementary and middle school levels is required , preferably in urban and diverse settings.

The individual will bring a strengths -based perspective and a deep understanding of the positive impacts of urban schools and communities.

  • Teach courses in the Elementary a nd Middle Education program .

  • Advise and mentor students.

  • C ontribute to collaborative program coordination and curriculum development .

  • S upervise preservice teachers in clinical experiences .

  • A ttend program and department meetings.

  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements

  • May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques

  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques

  • Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs

  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading

  • Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline

  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed

The School values and has strong collaborations with area public school districts and community organizations.

The Department of Teaching and Learning offers programs at the bachelor , masters, and doctoral levels. Central to the work of the department is the preparation of teachers to work in settings serving culturally and linguistically diverse children. The department offers teacher education programs for early childhood, elementary and middle education, secondary, and special education.

The Elementary and Middle Education (EME) program prepares individuals to meet the needs of diverse populations in regular education settings. Clinical and student teaching experiences occur mainly in urban settings and take place in close partnership with local school districts.

Minimum $40,000-$45000, actual hiring salary to be determined based on qualifications related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education or a closely related field .

  • Minimum of 5 years of classroom teaching experience in elementary or middle school classrooms.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in urban settings.

  • Successful teaching experience in higher education.

  • Supervision experience with preservice teachers.

  • Experience mentoring or coaching practicing or preservice classroom teachers.

  • Expertise in general pedagogy or core content area methods.

  • Experience in providing a supportive mental health environment or teaching for social and emotional learning.

  • Current or past licensure as an elementary or middle school teacher.
