Phlebotomist

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, assists in Clinical laboratory, as needed. Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, blood cultures, blood samples.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Competencies:

1. Blood Collection: Accurately and safely draw blood samples from patients using appropriate techniques and equipment. 
2. Sample Handling: Properly label and store collected blood samples to maintain integrity and prevent contamination. Knowledge test requirements 
3. Specimen Transportation: Ensure samples are delivered to the correct laboratory in a timely manner. 
4. Patient Interaction: Explain the blood draw procedure to patients, address their questions and concerns, and provide emotional support. 
5. Medical History and Accuracy: Verify patient identification and collect relevant information (medical history, allergies, etc.) to ensure accuracy in the blood draw procedure. 
6. Procedure Documentation: Maintain accurate records of blood draws, including date, time, patient information, and sample collection details. 
7. Safety Protocols: Adhere to strict safety protocols to prevent infection and accidents during blood draws. Dispose all sharps in a rigid sharps' container.
8. Patient Education: Provide clear and simple explanations to patients about the blood draw process and answer questions they may have about the procedure. 
9. Technical Skills: Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, equipment, and safety procedures. Enter Patient demographics in EMR. 
10. Soft Skills: Good communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with a positive attitude and a compassionate approach to patient care. 
11. Attention to Detail: Ability to follow instructions carefully and accurately. Knows how to prioritize STAT, ASAP scheduled and outpatient orders.  
12. Anatomical Knowledge: Familiarity with the human circulatory system and common venipuncture sites. 
13. Stress Management: Ability to handle stressful situations and work under pressure. 
14. Patient Care: Empathy and understanding of patient needs and anxieties
15. Quality Assurance: Preanalytical and Postanalytical daily checks for order, billing, and faxing accuracy. 

Professional Requirements:

1. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and professional.
2. Completes annual education requirements if applicable.
3. Maintains regulatory requirements.
4. Wears identification while on duty.
5. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
6. Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process.
7. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.
8. Attend all meetings as appropriate.
9. Exhibits the mission, ethics and goals of Modoc Medical Center in the performance of job duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
2. Is involved with personnel, visitors, and government agencies, etc., when necessary.
3. Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients and support agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and moves intermittently during working hours.
2. Able to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.  

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
2. Eighty hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture and skin punctures under the supervision of the Chief Medical Technologist.
3. California Phlebotomy CPT I Certification.
4. One year experience in Lab setting preferred.
5. Ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively.
6. Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.
7. Must be a team player to all departments, confidential of sensitive data, respectful of all other staff members, considerate of other people's time, and accountable for work output
