Its reputation is built on delivering high-quality projects that meet client needs while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
About The Role The Overhead Line Design Engineer role at NG Bailey offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to essential infrastructure projects across the UK. Based from either our Leeds, Stowmarket, or London offices, with the flexibility to work remotely, the successful candidate will be instrumental in designing and delivering overhead line (OHL) projects, including new build and refurbishment initiatives. The position requires travel to client sites, internal meetings, and site visits as necessary to ensure project alignment and successful execution.
This role involves working closely with the team lead to develop innovative, compliant, and safe designs for overhead lines, providing technical guidance and expertise throughout the project lifecycle. The engineer will be responsible for producing detailed technical documentation, including reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, ensuring all deliverables adhere to industry standards and client requirements. The position also entails preparing proposals, managing project scopes, and allocating resources effectively. Additionally, the engineer will support junior team members through mentoring and training, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
Qualifications To succeed in this role, candidates must possess a strong educational background in electrical engineering or a related field, with relevant industry experience in overhead line design, particularly within the power transmission and distribution sectors. A comprehensive understanding of UK standards and regulations governing OHL design is essential.
The ideal candidate should have proven experience in producing designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV. Proficiency in design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER is required, along with familiarity with AutoCAD 3D. Knowledge of MicroStation CAD software and a CSCS card are desirable but not mandatory. A full UK driving licence is essential, and candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, capable of conveying technical information clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
Additional qualifications include a good understanding of CDM 2015 regulations and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations. Strong project management skills, the ability to handle multiple priorities, and a proactive approach to professional development—such as progressing towards chartership—are highly valued.
