Our Environment Business Following various acquisitions, we are now the largest Tier 1 contractor operating in the UK Water / Environment sector with a long‑term portfolio trading £500 million a year. As part of our 2030 strategy we have consolidated all aspects of engineering design under one business unit, expanding to provide in‑house design support to our various regional business units across the UK.
Purpose of the Role As a predominantly drinking‑water‑biased senior design engineer, you will be an important member of the engineering design team and will work with principal engineers, design managers and leads to deliver design to the highest quality in compliance with GT process and the BMS and H&S regulations. This is a technical role, engaged directly on projects, requiring competency in technical design delivery in the water and wastewater industry. The senior design engineer may have line‑management responsibility for discipline design engineers and other design engineers as required.
In addition to providing direction and assisting with innovations, you will contribute to the engineering governance of your discipline design activities, ensuring that design integrates with other discipline production activities, providing technical support to supply‑chain procurement activities and supporting site activities as required. You will support the discipline manager and principal engineers for knowledge sharing and development of discipline engineers, including mentoring and support of early careers.
Key Accountabilities
Provide technical compliance and quality on design outputs; default checker for design outputs to ensure technical assurance and quality control.
Operate as discipline lead for a project.
Seek optimal solutions/efficient designs that balance capital and operational cost benefits.
Design for buildability, safe construction and operation, working alongside project delivery peers.
Assist in ensuring procedural governance is adhered to.
Ensure scheme designs adhere to client specifications and standards.
Ensure full compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation.
Promote innovation, value engineering and digital design.
Technical problem‑solving throughout the project life cycle (e.g. from concept design through to final construction support), identifying, mitigating or safely managing potential issues through technical governance and risk/opportunity management.
Assist with pre‑contract design activities.
Provide lessons learned on projects to the design team and discipline design managers, covering good and bad feedback to be promoted or avoided on future schemes.
Line‑manage multi‑disciplinary design engineers.
Share and impart knowledge to our teams; mentoring and development are essential.
Develop and support staff to encourage accreditation with professional bodies (e.g., ICE, IET, IMechE, IChemE).
Person Specifics
Competent at carrying out process calculations, mass balances, heat balances and hydraulic calculations.
Competent at preparing process block diagrams, PFDs and P&IDs.
Competent at developing process control philosophies and process commissioning plans.
HAZOP leadership experience desirable.
DSEAR experience desirable.
Educated to degree level in engineering or equivalent qualification.
Preferable to be a chartered member of a recognised professional engineering body.
Competent within a contracting/consulting environment, with commercial awareness.
Strong experience in checking and approving discipline design packages.
Knowledge of current H&S legislation and British Standards and experience applying them across designs.
Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
Excellent IT skills – experience of using Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and cost/performance management systems.
Provide leadership, direction and encouragement to the design team.
