Overview Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead high‑profile projects and mentor junior engineers in a hands‑on role focused on design and technical support services for data centres, clean rooms, pharmaceutical and other mission‑critical projects.
Responsibilities
Manage and deliver design work throughout design and build projects, taking full accountability for mechanical services for data centres and other mission‑critical projects.
Undertake design reviews and appraisals, providing technical advice and assistance to project teams.
Guide and develop design team members, acting as a mentor to help the team achieve goals and objectives.
Check calculations and provide monthly design progress reports, highlighting technical risks and opportunities.
Provide design/technical assessment support of tenders and deliver high‑quality design solutions that address contractual obligations and mitigate technical risk.
Serve as the senior engineer on projects, leading regular design meetings with the project team.
Maintain an accurate technical audit trail through design, procurement, installation and commissioning stages.
Ensure the successful delivery of projects with high‑quality design completed on time and within budget.
Adhere to health and safety requirements in all design delivery.

Qualifications
Recognised qualification in mechanical or building services engineering (e.g., BEng / MEng).
Proven experience in mechanical services design following appropriate standards, guidance and client requirements.
Experience managing multiple projects concurrently and communicating priorities with the team.
Experience developing team members and providing leadership to engineers and designers.
Effective decision maker, using judgement to consult with project stakeholders and escalations.
Proven experience in leading mechanical services design for data centres and other mission‑critical projects.
Experience with sustainability & compliance (BREEAM, heat, fume, noise emissions, Part L), mathematical modelling (CFD, FEA, etc.) and related services.
Experience delivering and managing design up to RIBA Stage 5, in line with RIBA Plan of Work, BSRIA BG6 schedule of services and ISO 19650 requirements.
Experience working with typical design‑and‑build contracts: JCT, NEC, MF1 and others.
