Electrical Design Engineer – Large-Scale Solar
Location:
UK (with potential international exposure)
Role Type:
Permanent, full-time
About the Role An innovative, globally-active renewables organisation is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join their growing team. You will play a key role in the design of large-scale solar PV plants and associated infrastructure, working across multiple geographies and supporting major utility-scale projects. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong electrical design experience in renewables who wants to help shape high-impact, low-carbon assets.
Key Responsibilities
Design the electrical systems for utility-scale solar farms, including MV/LV switchgear, transformers, grid-connection points, cabling, SCADA/monitoring systems and battery storage integrations.
Prepare detailed electrical layouts, single-line diagrams, technical specifications, design drawings and equipment schedules.
Collaborate with civil, mechanical, structural, and BESS teams to ensure full design coordination and interface management.
Support grid-connection studies, fault current calculations, load flows, protection design and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
Review vendor data sheets, lead technical evaluations of equipment, and issue design documentation for procurement and construction phases.
Work with site teams, EPC contractors and construction partners to ensure design intent is maintained throughout installation, commissioning and hand-over.
Drive innovation, continuous improvement and technical excellence in all design work, contributing to design standards and best practices within the business.
Provide support across multiple projects and geographies, adapting to different regulatory regimes and construction markets.
Key Skills & Experience Required
Qualified Electrical Engineer with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience designing solar PV plants or large electrical infrastructure projects (ideally utility-scale).
Proven experience with MV/LV design, switchgear, transformers, cables, grid-connection, and protection systems in solar or renewable energy projects.
Strong knowledge of industry standards and design codes - e.g., BS 7671, IEC, IEEE, etc.
Proficiency with design software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP/Digsilent/Calculation tools, PVSyst/Helioscope or similar modelling).
Excellent technical drawing and specification writing skills; ability to review supplier documentation and issue clear, constructible design deliverables.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with multi-discipline teams and present to internal and external stakeholders.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, global environment - willing to travel as required and adapt to different project contexts.
A proactive, solution-oriented mindset with a passion for renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.
Nice to Have
Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid renewable systems.
Previous involvement in large project delivery in international markets.
Understanding of grid-connection consenting and regulatory frameworks across the UK/Europe (or globally).
Experience in EPC environment or with contractors in construction/commissioning phases.
What’s on Offer
Join a forward-thinking renewables business with an expanding global footprint and a strong pipeline of large-scale solar and clean-energy projects.
Work on technically challenging, high-impact projects that contribute to the low-carbon transition.
Opportunity for professional growth, design leadership and involvement in cutting-edge renewable infrastructure.
Competitive salary and benefits, hybrid working model, and the chance to be part of a dynamic, collaborative technical team.
