Your time will be split between 4 days per week working within the Mechanical Design team at Waters Corporation, and 1 day per week attending "The University Greater Manchester" in Bolton.
Responsibilities
Assist in the design of mechanical components and assemblies for Mass Spectrometers and related equipment under supervision.>
Help specify bought‑in components for integration into scientific instruments.
Work collaboratively with other team members and departments to support ongoing projects.
Interpret development specifications with guidance and contribute to producing accurate engineering information.
Gain exposure to CAD modelling, engineering drawings, and design reviews.
Learn how to liaise with suppliers to understand manufacturing techniques and cost‑effective solutions.
Familiarise yourself with Waters’ product range and keep up to date with developments in mechanical engineering.
Attend exhibitions, seminars, or training courses as required.
Follow company policies and procedures, ensuring work meets quality standards.
Attend university as scheduled and complete all modules required to achieve the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering qualification.
Maintain the effectiveness of the Quality and Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) system at the sites via adherence to applicable policies and procedures.
Complete Quality and Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) System related actions in a timely manner according to procedures, e.g., CAPA, NCR.
Adhere to Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
Academic Commitment
Attend university as scheduled and complete all modules required to achieve the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering qualification.
University Entry Criteria
UCAS Points: A minimum of 96 UCAS points – we consider each applicant on their own merits. We accept a wide range of qualifications that carry UCAS points, including A-levels, BTECs, and T levels.
Your Level 3 study must include:
A mathematical‑based subject
A science, technology, engineering, or additional mathematics‑related subject (e.g., A-level Mathematics and Physics, or a BTEC 90‑credit Diploma in Engineering).
GCSEs: Five GCSEs at grade C or above / grade 4‑9 (or equivalent), including English, Mathematics, and a science, technology, or engineering‑related subject.
Aptitude / Skills Required
Strong interest in mechanical engineering and design.
Good problem‑solving and analytical skills.
Attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality work.
Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Self‑motivated with a willingness to learn and adapt.
SolidWorks CAD experience or similar 3D system (desirable).
