Base Location:
Flexible Scotland – you must be based at one of our SSEN offices or depots around Scotland (Perth, Aberdeen, or Inverness).
Salary:
£42,600 – £64,000 + car allowance + performance‑related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.
Working Pattern:
Fixed Term Contract, Full Time, Flexible First options available.
Role We have an excellent opportunity for a Telecoms Design Engineer to join our high‑performing Networks team and help achieve our Net Zero goal. You will report to the Telecoms Design Manager and work closely with stakeholders to develop, manage and support our control systems within the SSEN Transmission Telecoms network.
Responsibilities
Develop project requirements into solutions deployable within our Transmission network.
Take responsibility for design, commissioning and operational support, providing a unique opportunity to follow the full project life cycle.
Act as a Subject Matter Expert in your technology field, providing technical support, guidance and implementation and becoming a trusted advisor to internal colleagues.
Work with internal stakeholders – other business units, engineering departments, project managers and designers – to determine project scope and detailed requirements.
Qualifications
A degree in Telecommunications Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline (equivalent experience will be considered).
Knowledge of SDH, PDH, IP networks (Layer 2 & 3), microwave radio and PMR/DMR UHF.
Knowledge of fibre systems, fibre characteristics, electrical utility fibre, ground‑deploy and 3rd‑party systems, including Openreach OSA & EAD product sets.
Excellent communication skills at all levels, able to produce structured, reasoned justifications and clear, well‑structured technical documentation.
Ability to prioritise workload in an organised, methodical manner to meet targets and deadlines.
