Network and Systems Engineer
We are seeking a versatile Network & Systems Engineer to serve as a technical backbone for our IT and media infrastructure. In this role, your primary focus will be on ensuring the stability, security, and performance of our network architecture. Secondly, you will manage Linux-based environments, storage systems, and AWS cloud services.
While this is an IT infrastructure role, you will also act as a bridge to our broadcast operations, serving as an escalation point for complex issues and assisting with media-specific technologies. This is an ideal position for a skilled network administrator looking to expand their expertise in cloud, storage, and media engineering.
This role will report to the VP, Technology and is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance at our head office in Toronto for a minimum of three (3) days per week.
Core Responsibilities & Duties
Network Engineering and Administration
• Core Networking: Configure, manage, and troubleshoot complex LAN/WAN architectures, ensuring high availability and optimal throughput.
• Hardware Management: Manage and configure network equipment, specifically firewalls, switches, and access points (Experience with Fortinet, Aruba, and HPE is highly valued).
• Protocols & Routing: Maintain a strong security and performance posture using TCP/IP, VLANs, OSPF/BGP, and VPNs.
• Advanced Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex network bottlenecks, latency issues, and packet loss.
Infrastructure, Cloud and Storage
• Linux Administration: Deploy, patch, and maintain Linux servers (RHEL/Rocky, Ubuntu) in both physical and virtual environments.
• AWS Cloud Support: Assist in managing hybrid cloud infrastructure, specifically working with AWS core services (EC2, S3, VPC, IAM) and ensuring secure connectivity between on-premise and cloud resources.
• Storage Management: Administer on-premise high-performance storage systems (NAS/SAN/Object Storage), ensuring data integrity, replication, and backup workflows are functioning correctly.
• Virtualization & Containerization: Manage virtualized infrastructure (VMware vSphere, Proxmox VE, etc.) and support containerized environments using technologies such as Docker, LXC, or Podman to optimize resource efficiency for business and production workloads.
Broadcast Support and Escalation
• Media Tech Support: Serve as a Tier 3 escalation point for issues impacting media production workflows that the Service Desk Support Tiers 1 and 2 cannot resolve.
• IP Broadcast Standards: Assist in the implementation and maintenance of IP-based broadcast standards (SMPTE ST 2110 and SMPTE 2022) and multicast networking.
• Operational Continuity: Ensure high availability for critical media services and assist in disaster recovery/failover procedures.
Automation and Operations
• Scripting: Utilize scripting languages (Batch, Bash, Python, or PowerShell) to automate routine maintenance tasks and backups.
• Documentation: Create and maintain thorough documentation of network diagrams, system configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.
• Mentorship: Provide technical guidance to junior Systems Support Administrators to aid in their professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
• 3-5 years of progressive experience in Network Administration or Systems Engineering
• Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Networking, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
• Strong proficiency in Layer 2/3 networking, firewall configuration (PaloAlto and Fortinet preferred), and switching/routing
• Solid administration skills in Linux (RHEL/Ubuntu) and Windows Server environments.
• Experience managing enterprise storage lifecycles and file systems.
• Familiarity with SMPTE ST 2110, SMPTE 2022, PTP (Precision Time Protocol), and Multicast traffic management is an asset
• Certifications in Cisco (CCNA), AWS (Cloud Practitioner or SysOps), or Fortinet (NSE) is an asset
• Experience with Ansible, Terraform, or containerization (Docker) is an asset
