UI/UX Designer

Reports To:
Manager of Digital Assets

Position Overview

This Role Is Special
You're not just making things pretty. You're:

  • Solving workflow problems for thousands of users doing complex work
  • Building intuitive user processes and experiences
  • Making interfaces feel manageable and enjoyable

If you've successfully transformed how users navigate complex systems while working with technical teams and shipping real improvements, we want to talk. Bonus points if you can share war stories about simplifying processes, making nested forms feel logical, and the satisfaction of watching support tickets disappear because users "just get it" now.

The Challenge That Will Define Your Next Year

We have a comprehensive management system handling safety, quality, HR, and compliance workflows. It's powerful. It works. Our customers depend on it, and they depend on features that are easy understand and use.

We need someone who sees confusing interfaces not as technical debt to apologize for, but as massive opportunities to transform how people experience their work every single day.

The Smart Design Strategy

We're not rebuilding from scratch. We're not chasing trendy frameworks. You'll start with Bootstrap 5 as our foundation, enhance it where users need better, and integrate proven solutions when it makes sense. Every improvement ships to production quickly. Real users benefit immediately. No six-month design system projects. Just practical UX improvements that make users' jobs easier while our developers can build them.

A Little About ASM

At Advanced Safety Management (ASM) our mission is to help busy people organize their processes so they can connect everything and everyone, keep people safe, grow their business, and shatter expectations. We do this by putting important management systems, like Health and Safety, Quality, Environment, and HR, under one hood

After nearly 20 years of thoughtful development, our comprehensive functionality software enhances compliance, elevates employee development, and supports accountability. We are a growing privately owned company with lofty goals and unwavering focus on the success of our customers. If this sounds like a team you want to be a part of, apply now.

Your Team

You're joining our experienced developers who've built every feature in this system. They can implement anything - they just need someone who understands users better than they do. They want better UX as much as you do. They're pragmatic, not precious about code. Show them a better library? They'll integrate it. Show them where Bootstrap falls short? They'll help you enhance it.

The Ideal Candidate

You're Perfect for This If You:

  • Love untangling complex workflows until they feel obvious
  • Know when Bootstrap is enough and when it needs enhancement
  • Think "what library solves this" before "I'll build custom"
  • Measure success by reduced clicks, decreased errors, and eliminated confusion
  • Know that the best interface is the one users don't have to think about
  • Can hand off designs that developers can actually build
  • Understand that "custom" doesn't mean "from scratch"

Must-Haves:

  • 3+ years designing complex web applications (not marketing sites)
  • Proven experience simplifying enterprise/B2B workflows
  • Bootstrap framework experience (and knowing its limitations)
  • Figma (or similar) for creating implementable designs
  • Understanding of what's realistic in HTML/CSS/JS
  • Portfolio showing BEFORE/AFTER workflow improvements
  • Experience with data-heavy interfaces (tables, forms, dashboards)
  • Canadian resident

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Basic HTML/CSS skills (can write semantic markup)
  • JavaScript understanding (what's possible, what's painful)
  • Experience integrating third-party components
  • Knowledge of which UI libraries actually work in production
  • Accessibility standards knowledge (WCAG)
  • Information architecture experience
  • Background in enterprise software or compliance systems

Your Mission

Be pragmatic about implementation:

  • Start with Bootstrap 5, enhance where it matters
  • Find proven libraries when Bootstrap isn't enough
  • Create custom solutions only when nothing good exists
  • Design improvements that ship weekly, not quarterly
  • Build solutions our developers can implement without learning new frameworks

Your Impact Metrics

We'll measure your success by:

  • Reduction in support tickets about "how do I..."
  • Decreased time-to-complete for key workflows
  • Fewer user errors in form submission
  • Increased feature discovery and adoption
  • Developer happiness when implementing your designs
  • Customer feedback shifting from "it works" to "it works great"

What We Offer

  • $75K to $110K base salary (based on experience)
  • 100% remote work
  • Tools and resources you need (hardware, design software licenses, etc.)
  • A team that will actually implement your designs
  • The satisfaction of fixing real problems for real people

In addition to your salary, you will receive our comprehensive benefits, including:

  • 25 vacation days a year
  • Continuing Education Fund
  • Fitness Allowance
  • Fun Stuff Allowance

Required with your application: UX Analysis & Redesign

We're sharing real screenshots from our production system. These interfaces handle critical business workflows that thousands use daily.

Provide these three deliverables:

Video Analysis (5 minutes max, use Loom - it's free)

  • Walk through ONE screenshot explaining the UX strengths and opportunities for improvements that you see
  • Identify where users would get confused, lost, or make errors
  • Three specific improvements you'd make
  • Whether you'd use Bootstrap as-is, enhance it, or integrate something else (and why)

Design Solution (Figma preferred)

  • Pick the most problematic screenshot and redesign it
  • Show the BEFORE and AFTER user journey
  • Indicate what's Bootstrap, what's enhanced, what's third-party
  • Include annotations explaining your UX decisions
  • Demonstrate how you'd handle the data density better

Implementation Reality Check (Optional - but shows you get it)

  • Provide the basic HTML structure showing semantic markup
  • Describe which Bootstrap components you're using
  • What enhancements or libraries you'd need to see added
  • Why you chose to build vs. buy vs. use Bootstrap
  • How a developer would actually build this
