Senior Attorney – Renewable Energy

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Department: Legal / Compliance

Role Purpose

The Senior Attorney is responsible for managing all legal affairs for the Atlantica Canada business, which includes, among other things, a district heating business, interests in two operating wind projects, and various development stage energy projects.

The senior attorney shall provide strategic legal counsel and leadership on complex legal matters related to renewable energy project development, Company transactions, regulatory compliance and HR and litigation matters as necessary. This role partners with business units, external counsel, and senior leadership to manage risk, negotiate high-value agreements, and ensure that all company activities align with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.

The Senior Attorney is a critical advisor supporting the company’s clean energy growth and investment strategy. This role is part of a global team working toward common goals. We operate as one company, across all locations, with shared responsibility and clear accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on the development, financing, acquisition, and operation of renewable energy projects, including contract drafting and negotiation for power purchase agreements (PPAs), EPC contracts, O&M agreements, joint ventures, M&A, and project financings.
  • Oversee legal due diligence for project acquisitions, investments, and Company transactions.
  • Provide counsel on all matters involving federal, state, and local regulatory requirements impacting renewable energy—including permitting, compliance, and environmental law.
  • Manage outside counsel for all aspects of specialized legal services (M&A, financing, project development, employment).
  • Draft, review, and manage a variety of commercial agreements (NDAs, procurement, services, real estate, etc.) to protect the company’s interests.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business development, project finance, engineering, and government affairs teams to ensure alignment of business objectives with legal strategies.
  • Support responses to audits, regulatory inquiries, and dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Lead or participate in company-wide compliance programs, policy development, and risk assessments.

Education & Certifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Member in good standing of a provincial bar; ability to practice (or obtain qualification) in Alberta to the extent not barred in Alberta.
  • Advanced coursework or certification in energy, environmental, or Company law is a plus.

Experience & Technical Skills

  • 8+ years of progressive legal experience (either in-house or at a law firm), with a strong track record in corporate , transactional, or regulatory matters in the renewable energy, infrastructure, or utilities industry.
  • Expertise negotiating and managing large-scale commercial and project finance transactions in the energy sector.
  • Deep knowledge of energy and environmental regulations, permitting processes, and policy developments.
  • Proven ability to manage outside counsel, complex projects, and multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent draftsmanship and contract management skills.
  • High level of integrity, business acumen, and sound legal judgment.
  • Proficient with legal research tools, contract management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
