Position Description:
The Design Technician role supports the Engineering Department by preparing detailed 2D and 3D drawings, models, and associated technical details and documentation. This role requires strong technical and analytical skills, proficiency and experience in computer-aided design (CAD) software and a keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy and compliance with design specifications and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Modelling:
- Create detailed 2D and 3D drawings and models of mechanical and electrical components, assemblies, nameplate details, etc. using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidEdge, etc.) based on engineering specifications and requirements.
- Convert sketches, concepts, and preliminary designs into engineering drawings as required.
- Support engineering personnel to update part and assembly drawings for manufacture based on design review changes, design improvement initiatives and customer feedback.
Documentation and Standards Compliance:
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including specification and data sheets, bills of materials (BOMs), part lists, finishing details and assembly instructions, as required.
- Prepare manufacturing packages (metal fab, assembly, finishing details, etc.) for manufacturing release to internal and external vendors.
- Perform quality checks on drawings and models to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure that all drawings and models meet company standards and follow GD&T standards.
Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with engineers and other team members to understand design requirements to ensure accurate execution of designs.
- Assist in resolving design-related issues that arise during production.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance drafting efficiency and output quality.
Requirements
Education:
- Drafting and CAD modelling certification, or associate degree or diploma in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field (preferred)
Experience:
- 2+ years of experience in a drafting role in an engineering or manufacturing environment of electrical distribution equipment, preferably transformers, or
- 3+ years hands-on manufacturing experience of engineered electrical distribution equipment.
Skills and Competencies:
- Basic proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidEdge, AutoCAD, etc.).
- Familiarity with mechanical and electrical drawings, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Basic understanding of mechanical fabrication, electrical wiring and related systems (preferred).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work under supervision and take guidance.
