Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Supervisor of Recreation & Community Programs, the Camp Counsellor will be responsible for:

  • Providing a high level of front-line customer service including greeting and engaging participants and informing parents/guardians, and responding to enquiries as required;
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding participants involvement in the program (i.e., positive feedback or any incidents
  • Working cooperatively and maintaining ongoing and effective communication with participants, parents, colleagues, and supervisors;
  • Supervising and working with groups of children, promoting a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for all campers and staff; 
  • Assists in the development and implementation of adaptive programming for participants with special needs.
  • Attending to the care needs (feeding, toileting, clothing changes, etc.) of participants with special needs including lifts and Transfers as required;
  • Dispenses and administers participant medication as required with appropriate guidance and approval;
  • Actively  participate in leading activities during program hours while adhering to program plans, standards and scheduled times;
  • Arriving at the program site on time to properly prepare for the day's program and start the program according to schedule
  • Acts as a positive role model for program participants and other team members;
  • Ensuring equipment is set-up and stored appropriately by performing daily opening and closing  tasks at Camp/Playground location to maintain a safe and organized program space;   
  • Performing regular site checks and ensures that the necessary equipment and supplies are available in a safe condition;
  • Become familiar with Town of Whitby policies, procedures and emergency procedures and be able to implement such procedures;
  • Ensuring the safety of all campers by providing emergency or first-aid assistance when required;
  • Reporting all concerns, accidents and incidents to immediate supervisor for follow up and to take appropriate action
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring To Our Team
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age;
  • Must be able to commit to the full term of employment beginning June 2026 through August 28, 2026 including mandatory training dates;
  • Previous experience working/volunteering with children, youth, and/or young adults with special needs (personal, professional or volunteer experience will be considered).
  • Post-secondary education (or an intent to pursue) in Recreation / Therapeutic Recreation / PSW/DSW / Social Work / Education program is an asset;
  • Strong understanding of how to deliver personal care (clothing change, assistance in the washroom, etc.) to customers with dignity and safety.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must possess and keep current Standard First Aid & CPR 'C' certificate (or be willing to obtain prior to starting employment)
  • A valid Police Criminal Record Check to work with the Vulnerable Sector; and
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (completion of a C.I.T Certificate or L.I.T Certificate will be considered an asset);
  • Students must be currently enrolled in and attending a secondary or post-secondary school on a full-time basis (students will be required to provide proof) for the 2025/2026 school year and be returning to a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis in September 2026.
     

What We Offer You
$17.66 per hour

Work Shift:

Flexible hours, Monday to Friday (up to a maximum of 44 hours per week).
