We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team. As the Principal Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing complex data models to support Trella's core product offerings, building ETL/ELT pipelines as well as maintaining existing pipelines, collaborating closely with Data Scientists, and providing mentorship to other team members. Location:
This role is remote with a strong preference for candidates within commuting distance of Atlanta, GA; Philadelphia, PA; or Nashville, TN. We will also consider applicants based in other U.S. locations. Reports to:
Manager, Data Engineering Responsibilities Design, implement, and maintain data models, pipelines, and architecture to support current and future product needs focusing on healthcare datasets such as claims, EHR, BCDA, and CCLF. Design processes to consolidate data from multiple sources into a single source of truth. Contribute to data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure data quality, security, HIPAA and other regulatory compliance. Identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in ETL/ELT pipelines, ensuring long-term scalability. Work closely with Data Scientists, Engineers, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into high-value, technical solutions.
Qualifications
8+ years of engineering experience Minimum of 3+ years demonstrated technical leadership Core Competencies Python Advanced SQL Apache Spark and PySpark Apache Kafka or other streaming technologies
Data Modeling & Warehousing Concepts
OLAP vs OLTP Normalized vs Denormalized data, one big table Medallion Architecture Multi-Tenant Architecture
Tools & Technology
Experience working with dbt or SQLMesh Experience with at least one major data platform and warehousing tool such as Databricks or Snowflake
Security & Compliance
Role based access control, audit logging, and data governance Knowledge of data security, encryption at rest/in transit, and tokenization Prior experience working with PHI/PII and experience working in audited environments
Healthcare Domain Knowledge
HIPAA, SOC2, and HITRUST compliance requirements and implementation Healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7) EHR operational data and claims data processing experience
