Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our team. In this role, you will initially assist with and progressively take on full responsibility for a wide range of accounting functions. Working closely with the Controller, this position offers a unique opportunity to develop and expand your skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing the full accounting cycle, supporting a variety of financial processes and projects

Key Responsibilities:

As an Assistant Controller you will initially assist with, and progressively assume full responsibility for, a wide range of accounting functions, including but not limited to:

  • Managing the full accounting cycle for multiple companies, including:

- Daily cash and credit card receipt processing
- Accounts receivable monitoring and collections
- Expense classification, divisional tracking, and job costing
- Accounts payable management
- Preparation and filing of GST and PST returns

  • Conducting bank and credit card reconciliations.

  • Performing cost accounting and budget tracking.

  • Preparing month-end working papers

  • Preparing ad-hoc management reports and providing analytical support related to operational costs and margins.

  • Supporting capital and large maintenance projects through detailed financial oversight.

  • Ensuring adherence to accounting policies and procedures, maintaining compliance with federal and provincial regulations.

  • Delivering timely weekly and monthly financial reports to senior management

  • Processing and recording accounting transactions, including:

- Accruals
- Prepaid adjustments
- Capital asset recording

  • Managing payroll processing for approximately 45 employees, including:

- Calculating statutory holidays
- Filing source deductions, EHT, and WCB returns
- Administering employee benefit deductions
- Managing vacation pay
- Processing expense reimbursements
- Issuing Records of Employment (ROEs)
- Supporting onboarding and offboarding processes related to benefits
- Responding to employee questions regarding benefits

  • Contributing to a positive and collaborative team environment

  • Performing bonding-related tasks

  • Undertaking other duties as required by the business

  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Professional CPA designation is required.

  • In-depth knowledge of accounting standards, including ASPE.

  • Proficiency in computerized accounting systems and MS Office. Experience with QuickBooks is highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively and maintain positive working relationships across teams.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

  • Highly motivated, proactive, and results-driven approach to work.
