Job Description
  • Ensure financial data is reliable and accurate, and that internal and external reporting is timely.

  • Provide financial leadership to operations groups, reviewing and reconciling budget variances.

  • Represent the finance department on multi-department teams.

  • Manage the day-to-day activities of staff, providing support, guidance, and direction. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Ensure effective financial controls are in place.

  • Identify, plan, and implement process changes and new technology to improve efficiencies and increase reporting accuracy.

  • Oversee the integration of newly acquired subsidiaries, advising and training in areas concerning general ledger accounting, accounts payable and accounts receivable.

  • Complete reports, special projects or any other duties as set out by the Corporate Controller or Senior Management.

  • Required to deal with Bankers, Suppliers (reciprocal business), External Auditors, Tax Auditors, Government Officials, and legal council.

  • Providing information to and working with Senior Managers, Department Heads at Head Office, Operations (Terminal Managers to Regional Managers)

  • Ensure compliance with purchasing policy, including issuing of PO authorization/supplier selection, and educating all levels of operations on cost control.

  • Decisions to improve the daily cash flow among the group of companies noted above.

  • Preparedness for year-end audit, including maintaining timely and accurate reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Ensure compliance and timely tax reporting to avoid penalties and interest. Tax planning and dealing with tax auditors.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in commerce or an equivalent, along with a professional designation (CPA)

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in financial accounting and reporting

  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines in a demanding and fast-paced environment

  • Strong systems knowledge to ensure success in a complex, highly computerized costing, operations and accounting environment, including AS400 knowledge and experience, and advanced proficiency in spreadsheets

  • Transportation experience would be an asset

  • Some travel may be required

  • Ability to work in the office
